Why can't I print separations in Illustrator or Indesign? Grayed out!
Robt (76 pencils) | Mon, 2006-08-21 17:25When I go to print the separations, the CMYK plates are grayed out, not giving me the option to print them. It's gotta be something simple. Any ideas?

In the "Color" drop down menu just above the separations list, click and select "Separations". Then you can click the icon of individual colors to select which colors you want to turn on and off.

See the attachment. I can't choose "Separations" as the mode. That's what's stumping me.
I notice you have "PCL 6" as your printer selection. It there an alternate "PS" selection for the printer? As I understand it (and I might be wrong) you can't use PCL to print PostScript stuff and that seperations require PS.
this happens to me allll the time and i have no idea what causes it. my fix for it is rather 'mickey mouse' but it works. go to system preference and choose printer, remove the printer you want to seperate on, then after its removed...add it back. this should fix the greyed out seperation bar.
xacto!
This happened to me tonight, and I answered my own question and this one. You first need a printer that is capable of printing separations. Most, if not all, ink-jet printers won't print such a format and that's why its gray. Post-script printers - choose a printer - print separations.
Another workaround is to print seps to a pdf file and then print the pdf file to your printer.
