Why do Captchas HAVE to be soooo long???
Doug M. (421 pencils) | Sun, 2008-03-23 23:37Can't they just be like...3 letters? Why must big websites like myspace or yahoo torture us with captchas that have over 8 letters??? It doesn't even make sense!

having a captcha with only 3 letters would be too easily read by a computer, and not a human. Therefore, by adding 8 letters (or more) makes it much more difficult. Hence, its purpose to begin with to ensure the recipient of the captcha is a human, and not a computer.
But don't quote me on this....=P

ya...but it's sooo annoying.
They have to be annoying because the spammers keep getting smarter. The "robots" they use to spam forums, chat rooms, blogs, etc. are getting better at what they do.
Here's the sad thing. The reason they keep getting better, and the reason spam is getting worse and worse is because people actually fall for it. People click those links. People actually buy the shit they're selling.
Spamming is a relatively cheap way (cost per click) to advertise your junk. If a company can make just a small handful of sales off of millions of spam mails sent out, they've recovered their money already. It's quite sad.
