I'm fully aware of the baseline grid's existence and what it does, but it never crossed my path why it is necessary. Can someone clue me in? Thanks.

...baseline grid in print only. Is it absolutely necessary? I mostly find it annoying.
The article has to do with print as well.
Baseline grid is good if you are a stickler for text. Most people aren't.
