Why Wait Webs site redesign - input appreciated

I am redesigning my site. I always have a hard time with my own stuff, wondering if anyone is willing to offer some creative input on this VERY early revision of my new website.

I'm not sure if I like the "messy" text area, or if I want to keep it cleaner cut. I'd also like to include some glassy clock images, my theme is going to be "Traveling through space and time for you" or something to that effect.

Any input is very much appreciated, remember this is an early attempt, I would never publish this as is (except to receive critique, obviously) :P

There's really not enough here to critique. However, one thing I do know is a background image this large is going to make your site more bloated than it should be. For optimal google ranking, make sure each page is 160K or less. You're going to have a hard time with that with such a detailed image in the background.

What style are you going for? Why? Answer these questions for us so we can give you more input.

Think about what happens when a person resizes their browser window to 2000px.

I really like this as a background design. The "Why Wait Works" is hard to read though. It might be cool if you had some other brighter colors coming through (just in small amounts).

it looks very 10 years ago. and a lot like one of the templates you might find at paperdirect. and really nothing at all like a web site.

i think nate has the right idea. figure out what you're trying to accomplish here. what's the look and feel you want? is it really black and scribbly with sparkles? what kind of page structure will you have? you have no place for any navigation. you really don't seem to know what the page should look like.

spend some time looking at some of the better web sites out there and try to understand *why* they're good and what makes them well-designed and what makes their user interfaces work so well.

right now i don't think you have a handle on user interface design.

Good design, but too dark, unless you're trying to attract a particular clientele. From a corporate standpoint, it won't work. It says moody, rock-goth; or on a wider stretch...outer space.

I like the "sticky" "W" as a wordmark. To me it says, you're branching out on the web. Then again, it could say I've spent WAY too much time at a water-access only pub today and I really shouldn't be critiquing anything 'cept how to make a decent cup of coffee.

Cheers and keep going.

Thank you everyone for your comments! I appreciate it very much. I think I'm going to basically start from scratch on this one.

3dogmama: Thanks very much for the comments. You're right, it's too dark for the audience I'm after. I need to make it more "corporate"... But I would like to try and keep some style in it... If only I were Johnathan Ive :) Thanks for the comment on the logo :)

gwells: Hehe, I hadn't even thought about the paperdirect... But now that you mentioned it it's buggin me too X_X The navigation was going to go on the top bar. I just hadn't put it in yet. But I think I'm gonna start over on this :/ Thanks for your comments, but I respectfully disagree with the UI design comment; I have a clear vision in my head, I believe the problem is that it's not totally coming through yet on this early version.

Pokie: Sounds like good advice. Perhaps I will try using this for a different project it's more suited to. I can see how that could be really cool.

Ivan: Not sure what you're getting at, are you suggesting I do a fullscreen layout? I'm not a big fan of 'em :/

natobasso: I was trying to communicate sort of "forward thinking" or "future is now" type thing. I will be sure to provide more details next time I upload.

Thanks again everyone!

*shrug*

all we have to go on is what you show us. and in what you've shown us, there was no UI direction, just two background elements and a logo.

what i think ivan is getting at is that you don't control the size of the users' browsers. what if the user's browser is 2000 pixels wide on their screen? your PNG is 1000 px wide. and the usable area of the PNG is probably 650 px wide. leaving a lot of wasted browser space. i presume he's suggesting you allow for the active text area to scale with the browser width.

But be careful with this, obviously, as you don't want people to have to read text across a 2000px wide container...

yes, agreed. and most people don't have 2000px wide monitors, let alone have their monitors maxed. but users often have browsers wider than 1000px (mine is about 1300px wide at the moment). and you often have more than one column of content, leaving the main content column at a % of the total width.
