Why Wait Webs -- Well, it's certainly a different direction
Submitted by luminousnerd.com on Thu, 2008-09-18 06:05.
It is late, and I may be slightly ludicrous to even propose this. Half of me thinks so, but the other half thinks I might be on to something. So your feedback is very much appreciated.
Thanks!

Keep it simple
I don't have anything to say. I want to see what everyone else is thinking.
I think the other design is more in the right direction.

The colours and folder tabs
The colours and folder tabs are not working here, but I like the use of the larger icon--maybe try stylizing that or screening as a watermark in background.
I've yet to get onto my own web work--you know, the case of the plumber with the leaky faucets--but I have sketched out my plan of attack, which I believe you need to do here as well. Take your time, have some fun, and it will come.

Those mushrooms must be
Those mushrooms must be kicking in...
Never mind the human
Never mind the human ingestion of those little gems, how about those black bears out in Vancouver? One swam out to two fisherman just the other day, climbed aboard and proceeded to maul one while the other beat the bear with an oar. If it had been me and I'd seen a 600lb. animal with claws and teeth swimming out towards me, I would have been but a wake in the water.
However, this attack against man out in western Canada is not an isolated case. There's been several. I think that the bears out west have been doing a little too much grazing on the wild mushrooms they grow out there...

Can you imagine a wild
Can you imagine a wild animal eating something like and going on a trip in the back woods somewhere? Its enough when you take them on purpose and know what to expect.. so I am told.
Hmmm....Rocky Raccoon
Hmmm....Rocky Raccoon tripping out a gazillion miles an hour... Then he spots an eight-foot scarab wiggling towards him... Nope. Couldn't envision that one.

Step back for a minute.
This isn't working, but reading through the other comments, you probably already knew that.
I don't want to walk you through the process of creating a website (you should know how to do that on your own), but I'd like to make some suggestions on the creation process. It might help get you on track to creating an image that you want to represent yourself with.
1. Decide on a a basic layout. I'm not talking about where each little element goes. I'm talking where your navigation, main content, and logo are going to be. That's all that really matters, anyway. Some people like two columned layouts. You could have a logo, navigation, and then content, all stacked on each other. There are a lot of different options. But at this point, I want to make something very clear: Keep it simple. Don't worry about shapes or colours, just basic blocks of content.
2. Decide a colour scheme that works well together, and represents the mood you'd like to come across. If you're not experienced in using colour, use a site like this. You can search something like "brown" and a whole bunch of different schemes come up. Please don't just throw random colours together. There is a science and an art to colour.
3. If you don't want a site in Flash, don't even touch Flash. Hide the shortcut if you have to. Take it off your taskbar. IF you want something in CSS, do it in CSS. Don't make excuses not to.
4. Don't try to imitate others too much. Don't add a lightbox gallery if that doesn't fit you or your site. Don't use badges or reflections if your site doesn't call for it. Ultimately you want your site to represent you and your services.
I hope that helps. You need to envision what you want your image to be. You can't really do anything until that is done. Once you do that, my process usually goes to Photoshop in order to flesh-out the image, and then directly to coding.

Hey Stephanie, thank you so
Hey Stephanie,
thank you so much for taking the time to write this for my benefit. I really appreciate your comments. This is not my best work, I created it while extremely frustrated and tired; I think an apt title for it would be Rebellion Against Sanity.
Not sure why you're telling me #3? Flash has fantastic Vector editing tools, so I often use it in combination with Photoshop even if I don't plan to have any Flash in the final product. And...I always do things in CSS. I haven't made a table layout in years!
Anyway thanks a lot for the comments, I will surely take into consideration on my next attempt.

Understood.
Understood, I was mostly saying it because you were saying your last website was completely Flash. I guess I assumed you would get your vector graphics from Illustrator. I said CSS as an example, I never meant to sound like you don't know/use CSS.
Good luck with the next design. :)

Oh yes I have frequently
Oh yes I have frequently renounced my last site :) I hate all-flash sites, it was intended to be there for a few weeks at most, replaced by the ultimate site that I just can't seem to design for the life of me.
I never really familiarized too much with Illustrator. I know it's powerful and I know my way around it basically, but I've always felt more in control with Flash's controls. I learned Flash first so I suppose that may have something to do with it.
Color is definitely my weakest link, so thanks a lot for showing me the ColorSchemer Gallery. Natobasso also gave me the name of a book in my last critique I'll have to check out soon.
Thanks again for your comments, I had a look at your portfolio and you're fantastic, I especially love the chocolate website.

In addition to the other
In addition to the other resources mentioned above, I would say to just pay attention when you are cruising around the internet. If you see a color scheme you like, maybe take a screen shot and stuff those in a folder on your computer. When you go to design a new site, browse through them and see if anything fits the bill.
Another good site for color schemes
...is www.colourlovers.com, where you can also download the pallette for use in a number of programs.

colours could do with going down a shade or two.
Lighten, simplify, avoid all the odd alignment of items, instead of being interesting it just looks wrong.
