WordPress
Abdul (576 points) | Tue, 2005-04-05 22:25Blogger is doing my head in lately. I'm thinking of moving to WordPress. I've seen some good blogs with WordPress and you can have like categories too I think which is cool.
Just wanted to ask, anyone else think it's worth the move? Pro's and cons?
And if so, will all my posts be deleted and would I have to start again or is just a simple transfer thing?
Thoughts appreciated.

don't know about the transfer, but I switched recently from blogger to WP... don't regret it a bit!!!
much better control over everything, you can change the looks of it as you like and so fourth.
you can see my blog here, though in icelandic. it's the basic look that comes with WP:
http://www.larusson.com/blog/
here is a friends blog, same system, but he's changed the look a bit:
http://onrushdesign.com/blog/
I give it 4 thumbs up!!
Wow! The comments bit looks super!
I have to download something for WordPress right? What's it for and how would I blog? Would I need to log-in like on Blogger?
If someone could help me out with the transfer thing, that'd be cool. Could I like transfer all my posts across?
Sorry for all the questions, I just want to umm get the best of both bits.
Larusson, did you pay for a domain or do you get a domain like that with WordPress?
i paid for mine...
i recomend it to all net-nerds... it's not as expencive as you might think.
i.e. if you use Dreamhost it's about 8bucks a month...
please note...
to use WP, you need to have access to a domain that supports MySQL ... you make your own database and stuff (it's easy with the guidelines you get)... but you need somewhere to put your blog, WP doesn't give you a space.
Comments are great... and you can control everything. if you want to read over each comment, before it appears on your web youcan do that.
To blog you log into a webpage, simular to blogger, but with more controls.
Oh, righty then.
I don't think I'll be moving over. I need to get 'that' job first! Being a student, 18 and not working just sucks!
But yeah, that's deffiently going to be one of the things I'm going to do soon as well as buying my own domain and building a portfolio. But that's after my diploma when I'll be getting ready to freelance.
I need to learn CSS and HTML yet besides, and Dreamweaver.
Thanks though, I'll add it to the wishlist under a list of 50 or so things that are already on it. :)
I'm using WordPress for my site, CreativeGuy. I decided to make the switch for several reasons.
Categories
More setup options
More customization
You don't rely on Blogger's slower than crap server for posting
The "management" is much better
Plug-ins like crazy
MANY more themes to choose from
It's not as easy to set up as Blogger, but the results are fantastic once you're up and running!
Ivan and I actually considered using it for CreativeBits, but chose Drupal for version 2 of the site due to the integration of forums and galleries right in the blog.

i can highly recommend WordPress. I think there is a relatively easy way to import your blogger database to WordPress. link
Also check out other blogging systems before deciding on WP. especially textpattern
I revamped my good old beige G3 to a web server and moved my web log from Blogger to Pivot, because MySQL is just a step too far at this moment.
So I'm not the only one who is abandoning Blogger; I didnt like the letting go by Google of their employee who was too critical in his weblog, that wasnt that hip imho.
i haven't heard about that. :( i guess blogger doesn't bring enough money in? if every blogger had a google ad it may change the perspective. i don't think blogger has a future. the development of the engine is too slow and there are too many strong competitors with great communities and vision.
Agreed. Even though Blogger is pretty much credited with bringing the blog craze to the forefront, I'm afraid I see no future for it, at least in the state it is in now.

Yeah, I think I'll deffinetly need to move over, once I get enough cookies!
I started using Blogger like at the begining of this year. After Feb. I'd say, it started playing up. Now, it's like a regular thing! Rather annoying!

welcome dada1958! i love the language of Pivot. :D
Abdul,
I switched to WP this fall. Not that I EVER POST ANYTHING!! (I am yelling at myself for that! :D ) I found it fairly simple to set up, which is saying a lot, since I am profoundly clueless about anything that smacks of programming, but hey! I made it look pretty!
Dahliamadness
I styled it with the help of a couple of sites that are listed at the WP site. Moving around in the Adminstrator part is easy too.
I've been using WP for a long time. I get the occasional quirk (like for now, my comments aren't working, but it's okay because I'm moving to a different server next week, which means a fresh install which should wrap things up. I took this and modified it into what it is now, www.robotshuffle.com (always a work in progress, as I tweak this and that).
i've migrated to wordpress (from the ancient greymatter) in march after a lot of testing and trying (for example: my host is a crappy freehost, and it doesn't allows .htacces or .htpasswd files), and i'm quite satisfied: it runs, readers can post comments, i got feeds and stuff.
but: i still don't feel really familiar with wp: it lacks some seo power (unlike movabletype)(the only one i know is a mod-rewrite hack), you still can't assign themes to categories or subweblogs (like b2evo), and it's still not as flexible as pivot, and i found it a bit hard to customize.
Pivot, btw: i'm really a fan of the dutch blogengine. it's really easy to use and dead simple to set up everything. it's easier to build and run blog-kind sites with linkblog and stuff (wordpress: no linkblog? come on! it's a bad joke!) than any other blog/cms software. it's perfect...
i'm a fan. what else can i say?
my little blog:

Tnx... I like Pivot too, I think they've done a wonderful job. I borrowed a template from here. The coming weeks I'm going to play with Freeway and I have to dig in CSS as well.
chicks is all that's on your mind? ;)
gotta tell you, you win the weirdest sigpic award! :D
I'm thinking of having a blog on my next website.. Thinking of Wordpress..
It will be a fully CSS site with some Flash things such as menu..
Tigerstorm, looks like the gallery "Bilder" link on your current site is dead. You might want to fix that, it doesn't seem to be working for me.
Anyway, here's a cool WordPress blog I found. Got some nice photography! http://www.mustafahadi.com/
(Why don't people resize their images so they fit on the page properly, and not send the side bar right down to the bottom? :? )

I know it's dead.. I haven't done any image for very very long time in Photoshop.. I'm amazed you even got there hehe
Oh ok. Nice website though. And as to how I got there, visualization! :D
Thanks.. Hmm perhaps I should put a sign up.. Wreck on the net..

photography is great, but the site needs some customizing!
very nice website indeed! good example of excellent Flash usage.

I'll second using pivot. I'm running pivot on my blog(link below). It's worked pretty well so far, having used it since January. I was even able to convert my archive of posts from blogger to my pivotlog. The other bonus is the free factor, which is always good. Pivot also has catagories and all that fun stuff you're looking for.
I agree with the idea that blogger is dying. It looks like I missed the problems everyone was having with blogger lately since I upgraded. Seems everyone is bitching about it. I left mainly because it was too inflexible with it's features and needed something that gave me room to grow my blog.

I wouldn't be so quick to say that Blogger is "dying". I do think that it is suffering growing pains, but I'm sure that mama Google will help it along. I think that Blogger serves it's purpose, which is to bring blogging to the masses. The majority of people using blogger are non-technical people, who just want to have a site to share information with family and friends, without having to be be too web-savvy. It's good for them. However, some people, such as we, eventually decide that we'd like to have more power and something that better suits our needs, and so we tend to move on to software such as Pivot or Wordpress, which lets you be more technical. Before I moved to WP I was pretty daunted by the idea of switching, but when I saw how easy it was (once I got my own webspace), and I improved my knowledge of CSS and a little PHP, I decided to go for it, as I am sure many Blogger users have and will do so.
