is this worth perfecting do you think
Ruthy (159 pencils) | Mon, 2009-09-28 09:54I know I know, KISS and forget square and pages, But just have a look at this please, this was such a lot of work as I am just learning illustrator, in fact all those other bits I drew in illustrator too (not clip art - do you know how long it took me to learn how to draw a cog in illustrator?) this is all good experience for me.
anyway I personally think that this one might have potential. It looks great when shrunk right down even. I would have to work hard to get the shadow bits the exact shape etc and get a more curvy flow to the lines but do you think it would be worth it.
It looks good in any colour but they need it on black for their website.

It's not working at all for me. I preferred your triangular pages over this. Sorry.
As was mentioned in other threads, work on the typography first THEN introduce a mark, and only if a mark is necessary. I think a top-notch text treatment could work here.
Good luck!

Is this logo ALWAYS going to be on black? How about on their business card? What about letter head?
Why is the word SQUARE in red, and for that matter, why is the SQ in caps, but the others aren't? (assuming the s is in caps)

Check out what I've been up to lately!

yeah, the capital Q is bothering me. maybe especially because the "s" is in lower case. i can tell because the weight on the s, u, a, r, e are all heavier than the weight in the Q, which means the Q is capital and smaller font size.
i presume you did it to avoid decenders. if that's the case, and that's what you want to do, you'll probably have to create a custom letter so that the weights match. it really jumps out at you right now.
not digging the book here, either. not sure if it's the overall book or the fact that the page shadows are all off.
also, watch your kerning. the "ua" and "re" feel a little loose.
You're not listening. This is a little depressing to me. We are trying to tell you what's wrong with the basic idea and you're just saying, "yeah yeah yeah, so what?" and continuing along the same flawed path.
What you are selling with this logo is a newspaper, possible one that has square-shaped pages. You are not focusing on the client's product. FOCUS!
One thing I like is your emphasis on the word "square," but as Greg is pointing out, the single capital Q is silly. If you are trying to avoid the descender, then set the entire word in caps.
For now, I would recommend that you ditch any image at all, and concentrate on doing a fabulous design with just type. It can be done.

Yes - you're on the right track here. Take all that wonderful advice concerning the type you just received and then continue on this same path you're already on towards a more stylized version of the original triangle pages. Think sharp, clean, even, smooth, square, STYLIZED. Flip thru a real book - that is your inspiration. You're headed towards something along these lines, imho...
You are putting the 'square' in square pages. And by that I mean it's boring. Again, focus on typography in my opinion, right now its lacking and it'll continue to lack as long as you shy away from it. And when you start this, you have to think about the service and reinforcing that service, not reinforcing the idea of 'square pages'
