This design is normally white on black, but works any color.
Loewen is Lion. Husband wanted winged lion.

I like the mark, but I think it has too much detail, and it will get lost at a smaller size. I would suggest simplifying the illustration, getting rid of some lines.
The type in the other hand, definitely needs work. The typeface doesn't compliment the mark at all, I think maybe a serif font will work better with your mark, I will also place the type below the mark.
You will also have to work on the kerning, don't try to force Loewen and Media to take the same space, it looks weird.
Good work in general

Thank you! I really appreciate your comment. You are correct in that when sized down to favicon size for the website it didn't look right at all.
I'll redo the type as well!
I love to hear you say 'good work in general' because I lack confidence and that causes blocks. Thanks again : )

I'd flip the logo so it faces right to left. Then it won't look like it's trying to escape from the text. :)
As for the text, it just doesn't work with the logo. Find a font with more character, preferrably a good strong serif font good for display, not for reading. Copperplate is a good example of this.

Thank you! I'm going to try that.
This is a really brilliant forum. I am very excited about finding it.
I've been enjoying viewing all the work.

I agree with the other posters about the text. I also really like the illustration but agree that it is too detailed for a logo. However I don't think I would restrict the logo to working at 16x16 px for a favicon. That really limits you. You can always modify your logo to work as a favicon.

Thank you very much. I'll post up the "improved" version later. I am really glad I posted the logo for critique before we went and got our cards printed.

Basically just repeating what was already said here, the font is too plain, and the logo, while very cool, is too detailed.
Looking forward to your next version!
Thanks,

I had to finish up a couple of other bits. I don't get around to it yet. I need to redo the lion in pen, with less detail. I tried it with Copperplate typeface and it suits well. Thanks for the advice.

...kerning on type is horrible.
It's a nice idea but needs tweaking, a lot.

I finally got around to tweaking this logo. `You are all correct and when I shrunk it down for the business card it started to look like a strange unrecognizable Celtic design.
As I was redoing it, by hand I began to run into major problems. Only brought about due to my inexperience. (As an aside note: I have finally decided that I have to really get my head around using adobe illustrator, not just skim the surface so I have been doing some tutorials. If anybody knows any good sites for learning illustrator, please post.)
My main problem though is that when I went to redraw the winged lion using my 0.8 graphic pen I began with the idea of adding less detail, only including what I needed. But I lost all the muscle and strength definition. The lion looked flat and powerless.
I was thinking of making the lion a solid color. It won't work as an outline. What do you think? Sorry if I look like a total clutz, don't have a clue eejit..that's what I feel like right now. Tell me to go back to school if you like, but I am mostly self taught and realise I have a long way to go. Any pointers...
