XplorePods
dshives (9 pencils) | Sun, 2010-01-24 14:41Hi folks...
I would like a bit of feedback on a proposed logo for an education company. XplorePods are online learning simulations for students grade K-12. Subjects will include everything from Literature to Astronomy.
I've tried several directions with this logo. I've avoided the tired "Kids' handwriting" and fancy fonts for something that is a bit more conservative...The target demographic is teacher and school board administrators, not the most fun group; the folks staying home on a Friday night.
In any case, the idea of a pod is something I want to keep. I like the simple presentation of a sphere and when reduced to a 80px x 20px bug it still retains it's identity.
OK folks, there it is... whatta ya think?

Figures... I post the one with a transparent background... I tried to post an #EEEEEE background but got a spam warning... In any case, really appreciate any feedback folks.

hi mate,
try change that 3D "o" to the vector symbol. maybe u get some new ideas.
I like the first one the most, but you're not showing enough variation here. But why are you using a pod? Are you a Trekkie or somethin??
You're saying you want to go with the pod but that destroys the opportunity to come up with something better.

First one won't work at all with any amount of reduction. It's hard to see details of 'pod' even at current size. Perhaps the pod could be removed from the typography and become a larger icon that the type would support underneath. Somehow think about making the pod a symbol of the adventure of learning. Also, experiment with different font weights for 'Xplore' vs. 'Pods'. This would help make the mark work in a pure B&W setting.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
You might want to rethink your impression of your target demographic as well - having worked as a teacher for a while, most of us loved to go out on a Friday night after a stressful week! You don't have to go in a childish direction, but don't assume you're marketing to boring robots. I think the pod standing on it's own could work, as caoimghgin mentioned too, but maybe think of ways to make it more inviting and energetic - having the pod opening, or using brighter colors - the purple and gray remind me of office cubicles.
Thanks for that. A good designer can step into the shoes of others. Above poster tried, but didn't exactly do it right I guess.
Well he said the "idea of a pod is something I want to keep", so unless he is open for change, he can't really improve it. (He fell in love with his first idea)

Alright, easy boys... Yup, former teacher here... Nope, not in love with the idea but don't want to walk into the oragami scene... Love the idea caoimghgin and jackmancer are suggesting with font weights... The only thing I can't change is the name of the company.
Awesome suggestions so far folks, I hope to have something new this week...
One idea that occurs to me is to have the pod flying off (i.e. Xploring), with a trail of Jetsons-style "thrust rings" leading back to its original spot, the last ring serving as an "o". Probably wouldn't work when reduced, though, unless it were very simplified. Just throwin' it out there. :P
Tons of possibilities with that... I do a bunch of flash animations for my day job and I can see introducing a bit of fun with the pod component of the logo... I'll crack flash open and see where it takes me... Introducing kinetic movement may be a bit of fun if done carefully... Thanks for the idea!

Sometimes I like to see some nonsense approaches and this case seems to me that the creator have good skills and he simply didn't explore it to the limit yet.
Loved the first strange pod-bot and want it on my mac dashboard for some misunderstood reason xD.
You could make it like caoimghgin said. And if this is a web 2.0 company without brochures and other printed papers, you could make all yours idea and go to ANIMATE THE POD project.
The pod starts with sphere and become a bot. The bot could open and show as books and pencils and test papers and everything you need for that particular session. =D
Your dreams could be more than just a dream.
yes I'm brazilian xD
Yupper, Web 2.0 company with limited printed pieces... Interactive PDFs with embedded .swf files that CAN be printed (ewwwww)
I started with the simple sphere knowing it could evolve into some really fun things... I love what google does with it's logo, it's fresh, it morphs, but still has static elements to retain it's brand.
So, again, a sincere thank you folks for all your help...
yeah... no.
I don't really like the gray and purple together, as well as the font choice seems very unexplored to me. but it seems like you have some ideas from the comments thats been posted so I'll see ya in the next round!
I like the concept of the 'o' being the pod, but as a straightforward sphere it isn't working for me.
In your first logo you have expanded on this, but I think you can push it further, give it more character, make it bolder, this needs a little personality injected.
You'd be surprised... Teachers and administrators would love something fresh and funky to brighten up their days.

This is so generic it brings tears to my eyes.
Do some word associations. The first idea is rarely the best one.

haha Leaky, I saw that sneaky edit you just made. Surely you're not going soft on us? :)

Ha, I started with this one, went to the other, and came back. Not getting soft, just keeping the rage for the big ones ;)

Xplore Pods says "open pod" to me - not closed. But agree with most of the others - this looks like idea #1 - where are the others? Never get married to something halfway thru a project.
Try staggering the letters to imitate orbitting and give it some life. Big X in the front etc.
The pod replacing the o here is weak, plus you're going to lose the fine details when reduced.
With this one you might want to try a text treatment only and then plaster it on the sides of pod packaging.
