Yacht Consultant Business Card, Really Unhappy with Design

So my father asked me to create a business card for his own personal company in Yacht Consulting. He requested that I use the picture of him on his boat on the card.

To be honest, I hate the card...I really want to go in a completely different direction with it. Would love for any feedback all of your experts can advise :-)

Hi Lee, how lovely boat and picture! xD what's "his" name? You could mention it on your card, very close to the boat.

my suggestions:
1) forget the brown. you should choose blue/white (prefer white for navy) for boat background. try to make the water around boat as blue as possible with PS, it really seems a little brown.
2) this typography is very tired. could choose less rounded and more pro.
3) use more spaced kerning. principally the Sales/Charter/Delivery could explore space a lot.
4) think you could try more free grid. the actual layout is a little bit dull. don't need to align the two mid info margins. More freedom will make the text became part of water around.
5) care with spaces between Sales/Charter/Delivery
6) thinking maybe Sales/Charter/Delivery could be not so big and below your father's name. You'll reduce the number of blocks and get more free space for your eyes/boat.

I don't have that picture but made this card for your lovable boat xD

very easy to do it, this is Myriad version that uses regular, italic, condensed and semibold variants. maybe too much I don't know but I liked the result, the blocks are very distinct and easy to read.

your father's name got impact to function as logo.

the captain and the boat become a unique body crossing the ocean, that's why I think boat naming is very important and they are "linked". this is the main concept of this card =}

Agree with qwertyale's suggestions, plus I would surf around on a few charter sites such as:
http://www.charterworld.com/
to get the feel for the colours and typography. Sometimes looking at others' styles can inspire.
And don't forget the real estate on the back of the card once you have the front layout complete. ie. white background on the front with a softened water edge bleeding into the white; and a cyan-like blue or deeper for the back of the card with text knocking out white; and maybe a keylined bow with a few rippling waves cutting in from one of the edges.

Good luck with the biz...can't wait to get my SeaRay back in the waters...our lake is currently under several inches of ice! ;)

I would like to build a white version too. Need to cut the boat as you said and use raised ink/embossed to give life for the boat =]

All aboard the poop deck!!! jk!

I don't like the type used, I would use a lighter background color and a thinner font.

If you want, you can make your dad's version really super ugly and then draft up your super awesome version- compare it side by side and he'll choose your design.

Bye Bye Poop Deck.

I brightened the water as much as I could with my limited skills with a mask, changed the font, and moved the name to the center.

A heck of an improvement, however I am sure you guys and gals can find something more to help me with :-)

you should talk him out of using a photo on the card. nothing yells hack or ghetto louder than a photo business card.

hi,
i really don't like shadow behind text.
that picture masking is really horrible choose new way how connect water with background. for example put it in the frame.
get a air in that space. information as a email and phone numb. are too big. change that fonts and be careful, many sizes of font can looks chaotic. i need feel air in the font.
do u think about double side card?

Not in the boating industry. What you're looking at is basically the aquatic version of a realtor's business card. Realtors always have a head shot of themselves on their business cards - yacht sales folks always have boats. Just the nature of the game (more or less).

Suggestions: First off - fix the background. Instead of a colored background that's half photo and half flat color - why not all photo? If the photo isn't large enough - just clone more ocean around the boat. Then remove the boat name - that's extraneous. Align everything flush right and size the text correctly - everything except the address is WAY too large. Then get the weights right - the guy's name should not be overpowered by the Sales line at the bottom. Take the shadow off the Sales line or add it to the dude's name to equalize them. Usually the phone goes above the email addy too.

Its like the whole Yacht on a Business Card. Please offload some or make the card more related to your class of business by giving it a shape.

Thanks!

take care with "strange" shapes.
sometimes a business card is not the right place for unusual experimentations.

Mind it, your common Biz-card is like a theater ticket! Which always get lost in pocket with others & make no impression to your receiver. A Business Card is the glimpse of your profession. But yes! you can't be creative if you are an employee of an org. or in a serious business like Govt.

But according to me a Business Card is the best & effective tiny profile(with contact details) for any professional as it gets distributed directly by you to your target/potential clients and also helps make the first impression about you & your business.

May be my given shapes look strange, as I was just giving example and not a final design. But Shaped RIGHT, a business card can be a successful one. have a look...

I'm becomming sceptical about spent so money with it because gadgets like iPhone are replacing my dear Rolodex and we can easily add or change their info like cell phones numbers and email addresses that really changes a lot. OK, you're a graphic designer you want print some special bc for primary presentation as creative professional and wait for good receptivity from your new clients. That's our Joel Bauer karma. xD

Agree that subtle knives makes difference, other effects like embossing, special inks are all wellcome too just need a good taste to do it and knowing target's needs.

Exactly, just like a Realtor card...they really want the picture on it.

Here is the next iteration of it. I spoke with him about doing a die-cut card in the shape of a boat, however he wanted to keep a standard card, as he wanted to keep the cost down.

We're going to have to introduce you to the boating industry, ranamaju - you'd have a wonderful time trying to sell them something creative. :-) Those are all good suggestions, mind you - just an impossible sell when you consider the market.

The card looks better, but I think it will work even better if you did something sort of like Qwerty's option, only put the guy's name at the top right (a little smaller than your revised version), then the sales, delivery, charter centered under the name (where Qwerty has it - more or less) and the contact info along the entire bottom of the card in two lines:
1) Phone, email
2) street address

Then you could sneak the name of the boat behind it - either above the boat or at the back bottom (small size) - if the owner demands it.

His name was there but I go forward :P want to make something freshy with a bigger boat.

Hi @Art D. Rector
Yea you are right, I was thinking of making the full card. But here everyone do not like it this way and I respect their view. So I just gave an idea.

By the way please don't forget to introduce me d-_+b

Thanks!
