Yessssssssssss! I love to see the big corporations hoodwinked by a hoity-toity agency.
I agree, it's a disgrace.
Is this real? It can't be...?
please tell me it's a joke...
living on dreams and custard creams.
i sent emails to all their business offices begging them to tell me it was some kind of joke.
Wow. It's incredible. Provocative, brave, simple.
+1 for subjectivity.
To paraphrase a certain well known designer: "Subjectivity is everything. Everything."

There's a redesign contest going on here:

EDIT: there are some bad ones there but #75 really redefines BAD.

Perhaps they get the CEO's nephew who's an "avid designer" to design this crap. People freak out, there's a contest such as this one, then they pick one, maybe throw a bone the way of the "winner"?

sadly, the vast majority of these are actually far worse. wow.
The good news being if these samples represent the upcoming generation of designers - our jobs are safe for quite awhile.
haha, true

There's subjectivity and then there's just outright dumbass work...methinks maybe there's a GAP between the company's decision makers' ears....

Somebody tell me CapitalOne has been featured on this site.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
it's called "design by committee." where the committee either sucks all the life out of it or blows all of the shit into it.
Haha: http://www.makeyourowngaplogo.com/logos/499
People speculate it's genius marketing: http://news.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474978580527 Nah :)
They can sell this anyway they want before they start changing the logo in the stores, on the labels, business cards, etc... But once they change the first thing - that means it was a bonehead move. They could have been confused by the agency and decided to float it out there as a test balloon - that I can believe. Get free opinions before committing to changing signage, etc... because they didn't understand the logo as it was presented and maybe thought "Let's see what the public thinks first." Okay - I'll buy that. What I won't buy is that they planned it this way - drop the worst logo imaginable on the public just to get them talking about the company. This is NOT the kind of "buzz" that helps sales. This is the kind of buzz that makes you look out of touch with the public - it keeps people OUT of the stores.
This line from your link is very interesting and supports the notion that they didn't understand the logo and/or they were not getting designs that they liked from their agency...
------------------
"We've had the same logo for 20+ years, and this is just one of the things we're changing. We know this logo created a lot of buzz and we're thrilled to see passionate debates unfolding! So much so we're asking you to share your designs. We love our version, but we'd like to see other ideas," says Gap on their Facebook page, where incidentally the old logo still prevails.
------------------
If they "love" their version - why would they "like" to see other ideas? They would be confident in what they have. Obviously they are not. The only question is when did the crisis of confidence occur... before the public reacted negatively... or after? I say after.
I hate all.
yes I'm brazilian xD
They're already calling for new submissions.
+1 objectivity.
(Speaking of subjectivity versus objectivity, Ivan I see you've got an ad for scientology on here... is that a WebMediaBrands move or have you been brainwashed/dianetically audited?)

i think the whole thing is a cleverly (if not misguidedly) constructed publicity stunt.
helvetica is still an VERY viable typeface option.
just not in this case or in this application
i don't like it.
did you hire someone off of Craiglist to create this one? i agree, helvetica, over used and understated. it says vanilla all over it. GAP what were you thinking "outside the box" brand literally, not figuratively.
it's too bad. Great brand leader and killed itself with a bad logo.
Look how much attention and media this terrible logo has gotten them...It's clearly a terrible logo, they know that, they knew that they would get criticized for it. Seems like a great way to get themselves attention and hype and another 15 minutes of fame. How brilliant of them? Only downfall is next week when everybody is over it, they will have to have this horrid thing on all their clothes/etc.
