Hey there! Welcome to the fascinating world of WordPress. You’ve probably heard of WordPress, the leading Content Management System (CMS) that powers a good chunk of the internet. Now, why is understanding the dashboard icons so important? Imagine trying to navigate a city without knowing any of the road signs. Yeah, it’s kinda like that.

Getting Started with WordPress Dashboard

Welcome aboard the WordPress train! Now that you’ve got WordPress installed, your next pit stop is your dashboard. Think of it as mission control; it’s where you’ll launch your posts, tweak your settings, and customize your site until it’s exactly the way you want it. Picture the dashboard as the cockpit of an airplane, full of dials, knobs, and controls. But don’t worry, it’s not as complex—promise!

First Steps After Installation

Meet Your Dashboard: A Quick Tour

When you log in for the first time, you’ll find yourself on the Dashboard Home. It’s a little like walking into a command center: you’ll see quick links to create a new post, upload media, and other common tasks. There might be an “At a Glance” section showing the number of posts, pages, and comments on your site. It gives you a snapshot of your site’s activity.

Navigating to the Dashboard

After installation, you can access your dashboard by typing
yourdomain.com/wp-admin
in the browser’s address bar. Easy, right? Now, log in with the credentials you set during the WordPress installation, and you’re good to go.

Initial Settings to Consider

Before diving into posting and designing, there are some basic settings you might want to review. Head over to
Settings
in the left sidebar. Here you can update your site title, tagline, and set your preferred URL structure. Ever heard the saying, “Well begun is half done”? This is your well-begun moment!

Dashboard Overview

Main Menu: The Spine of Your Dashboard

On the left-hand side, you’ll see a vertical menu bar that includes every option you’ll need to manage your WordPress site. This is the backbone of your operations. You can click on each option to expand it and reveal sub-options.

Admin Bar: The Handy Top Menu

At the top of the screen is your admin bar. It has shortcuts to the most frequently used features, like adding a new post or editing your profile. It’s also where you’ll find the link to ‘Visit Site,’ so you can see how your website looks to the world. The central part of your dashboard is your work area. Depending on what menu option you’ve selected, this area will display various options and settings. It’s your canvas, so to speak, waiting for your creative input.

Anatomy of an Icon: Know What You’re Clicking

Each menu option has an associated icon, like a house for the Dashboard home, a pencil for Posts, or a picture for Media. Familiarizing yourself with these icons will save you a ton of time as you navigate.

So, the next time you log into your WordPress Dashboard, you’ll feel more like a seasoned pilot and less like a bewildered tourist. You’ll know where each control is and what it does, enabling you to fly through your tasks with ease.

The Different Sections of the Dashboard

Dashboard Home

Your Personal Overview

Once you log in, the Dashboard Home is typically the first screen you’ll see. It provides a quick overview of your site’s health and activities. Think of it as your home base, the mission control center of your WordPress website.

The Dashboard Home contains multiple modules or widgets. You’ll likely see “At a Glance,” which shows the number of posts, pages, and comments on your site. You might also see “Activity,” displaying your site’s most recent comments and posts. Ever wanted a crystal ball to get a glimpse of your site’s status? Well, this is it!

Customization

You can customize the Dashboard Home by clicking on “Screen Options” at the top right. From there, you can choose which modules you want to see and arrange them to suit your needs.

Posts

The Heart of Your Blog

The ‘Posts’ section is where you can create new blog posts or edit existing ones. If you’re in the mood for writing or sharing ideas, this is where the magic happens.

Under the ‘Posts’ menu, you’ll also find the ‘Categories’ and ‘Tags’ sub-menus. Categories are like the chapters of your blog, while tags are like the index. They help to organize your content and make it easier for users to find what they’re looking for.

Got an idea but not ready to publish? You can save it as a draft. Want your post to go live at a specific time? You can schedule it. The ‘Posts’ section gives you full control over the lifecycle of your blog content.

Media

Your Multimedia Library

When you upload any images or videos, they get stored in the ‘Media’ library. Picture it as a digital album where you can view, edit, and manage all your multimedia assets.

You can upload files by dragging and dropping or by selecting from your computer. You can also create folders to organize your media, although this may require additional plugins.

Did you know you can perform basic edits like cropping, rotating, and resizing images directly within the ‘Media’ section? Yup, it’s pretty handy!

Pages

Static but Significant

‘Pages’ are for content that is static and not regularly updated, such as ‘About Us,’ ‘Contact,’ or ‘Services.’ This is where you create and manage such static content.

You can set parent-child relationships between pages, or even choose different templates if your theme provides multiple page layouts. This gives you fine-grained control over the look and feel of individual pages.

Depending on your installed plugins, you can set individual SEO settings for each page, or even make a page private so it’s only accessible to logged-in users.

And there you have it! A detailed guide to the different sections of your WordPress Dashboard. Now, navigating through it should feel like a walk in the park. Or should we say, a stroll through your digital kingdom?

Decoding Dashboard Icons

Understanding what each icon on your WordPress Dashboard does can be akin to learning a new language. But once you know it, you’ll be ‘speaking’ WordPress fluently and navigating like a pro. Let’s go beyond the surface and explore these icons in more detail.

Posts Icon: The Pin of Creativity

Visual Language

The Posts Icon looks like a pin, almost like those you’d see on a physical bulletin board. It’s a visual nod to the idea that each post you create is like pinning a new idea or topic onto your website.

Functional Aspects

When you click on this icon, it opens up to reveal options for adding new posts, viewing all posts, and organizing categories and tags. Essentially, it’s your one-stop-shop for all things blog-related.If you hover over the Posts icon, a ‘Quick Add’ option may appear depending on your WordPress version, letting you add a new post without navigating away from your current page.

Media Icon: The Camera of Multimedia

Visual Language

The Media Icon resembles a camera, symbolizing the multimedia elements that can add life to your posts and pages. It’s an invitation to add color and movement to your website.

Functional Aspects

Once clicked, you’ll be able to upload new media files, be they images, videos, or even audio clips. You’ll also see an organized library of all the media you’ve previously uploaded. Did you know you can bulk upload media and later add them to posts? It’s a great time-saver for when you’re planning multiple posts in advance.

Pages Icon: The Paper of Permanence

Visual Language

The Pages Icon looks like a piece of paper, emphasizing the static, unchanging nature of the content you’ll create here. Think ‘About Us,’ ‘Contact,’ or ‘FAQs.’

Functional Aspects

Here you’ll manage all your static pages. You can edit, delete, or view them and even sort them into parent-child hierarchies or assign specific templates to them. If your theme supports it, you can use different templates for different pages, allowing for varied layouts without changing the overall theme.

Comments Icon: The Speech Bubble of Interaction

Visual Language

The Comments Icon is shaped like a tiny speech bubble, instantly signaling that this is the area for reader engagement and conversations. This is where you’ll manage all the comments on your website. You can approve, reply to, edit, or delete comments. It’s your mini social media hub right within WordPress.

Expert Tip

Regularly check this section to engage with your readers. Timely responses can foster community and keep readers coming back.

There you go! A deeper, comprehensive dive into the dashboard icons of WordPress. Knowing what each icon means and how to maximize its functionality is like having a detailed map for a road trip: it makes the journey that much smoother and more enjoyable. Are you ready to navigate like a WordPress pro?

Advanced Icons: Uncovering the Hidden Gems of WordPress

Sometimes, the default features just don’t cut it, and that’s when these advanced icons come into play. They are like secret weapons in a video game, each with its own special abilities that can boost your WordPress site’s functionality. So, what are these advanced icons, and what hidden treasures do they unlock?

Plugins Icon: The Power Plug

Looking like an electric plug, this icon suggests that it’s time to power up your website. When you click on this icon, you’re greeted with a list of installed plugins. From here, you can activate, deactivate, or delete plugins. Want more features? You can also browse the plugin directory and install new ones.

Expert Tip

Always read plugin reviews and check the number of active installations before adding a new plugin. The wrong plugin can break your site or introduce security vulnerabilities.

Users Icon: The People Manager

This icon resembles a person and makes it clear: here is where you manage your human resources. Click on this icon, and you’ll see a list of all the registered users on your website. You can add new users, assign roles, and even bulk-delete users if needed.

Expert Tip

If your site has multiple contributors, you can assign specific roles (Administrator, Editor, Author, etc.) to manage permissions effectively.

Tools Icon: The Handyman’s Friend

The Tools Icon resembles a mini-hammer, symbolizing the adjustments and tweaks you can make to your website. This section has various options for importing and exporting data, optimizing your database, and more. It’s essentially your toolbox for website maintenance.

Expert Tip

Regularly use the tools available here to keep your website running smoothly. Tools like database optimization can significantly improve your site’s performance.

Settings Icon: The Gear of Customization

The Settings Icon is shaped like a gear, indicating that this is where you tweak and adjust your site’s backend settings. From setting your site title and tagline to configuring your reading, writing, and discussion settings, this is your control room for fine-tuning your website.

Expert Tip

Before making any drastic changes, always backup your settings. Some changes can affect your site’s SEO or even its functionality, so it’s better to be safe.

Dashboard Customization: Your Dashboard, Your Rules

Ever walk into a room and immediately want to rearrange the furniture? That’s what customizing your WordPress Dashboard feels like. You have the power to add, remove, and even create new features tailored specifically to your needs. So, how do you go about it?

How to Add or Remove Icons: Tailoring Your Workspace

This is where your dashboard becomes your canvas, letting you add or remove icons based on what you need.

Functional Aspects

Within WordPress, you have the ability to tailor the sidebar menu, which includes all the icons we’ve discussed. To do this, you generally need to go into the ‘Screen Options’ tab at the top right corner of your Dashboard. Here, you can check or uncheck the boxes next to specific features to either display or hide them.

Expert Tip

Don’t go overboard with adding too many icons, as a cluttered workspace can be counterproductive. Keep it simple and only include what you need.

Using Plugins for Customization: So Many Choices, So Little Time

Think of plugins as the spices in a dish; they can transform your basic Dashboard into a flavorful work environment.

Functional Aspects

There are multiple plugins available that offer a wide range of customizations, from aesthetic changes to added functionalities. Some popular plugins for dashboard customization include ‘Adminimize,’ ‘WP Admin UI Customize,’ and ‘Dashboard Widgets Suite,’ among others.

Expert Tip

Always make sure to read reviews and perhaps do a trial run on a test site before fully integrating a new plugin into your live site. Plugins can offer great features, but they can also slow down your site or introduce security risks.

Dashboard customization in WordPress is like having a magic wand that lets you shape your world, or in this case, your website. From adding or removing icons to diving into the myriad of plugin choices, customization possibilities are almost endless. Ready to make the Dashboard uniquely yours?

Dashboard Shortcuts: Elevate Your Efficiency Game

Imagine having a remote control for your WordPress Dashboard, where you press a button and land exactly where you want to be. That’s essentially what Dashboard shortcuts are—a fast track to the features you use most frequently. So, how can you create these shortcuts and why should you?

How to Create Shortcuts: A Direct Path to What Matters

Think of creating shortcuts as laying down stepping stones that lead you directly to where you want to go.

Functional Aspects

To add a shortcut to your Dashboard, navigate to the feature or section you wish to have quick access to. Once there, look for the “Add to Dashboard” or “Star” icon that often appears near the top of the page. Click it, and voila! You’ve just added a shortcut to your Dashboard. Some WordPress setups also allow you to drag and drop features to reorganize your dashboard layout.

Expert Tip

Frequently assess your Dashboard shortcuts and remove those that you no longer need. Keep your Dashboard clean and efficient by only keeping essential shortcuts.

Efficiency Tips: The Game-Changers of Dashboard Navigation

Consider shortcuts to be your VIP tickets to the WordPress experience, letting you skip the line and get right to the action.

Functional Aspects

Shortcuts are more than just quick links. They serve as an organizational tool that allows you to categorize and prioritize your most-used features. They are especially useful for large websites with multiple users who have different roles and responsibilities.

Expert Tip

Combine the use of shortcuts with keyboard shortcuts for an even more efficient experience. Keyboard shortcuts can be enabled from your profile settings and can drastically reduce the time spent on comment moderation and other repetitive tasks.

Shortcuts in your WordPress Dashboard are like bookmarks in a long novel; they help you quickly pick up where you left off, enhancing your efficiency. Now that you know how to create them and why they’re so advantageous, are you ready to turn your Dashboard into a well-oiled machine?

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even in the seemingly perfect world of WordPress, things can go awry. Icons can disappear or maybe you just want to change them up a bit. Either way, it’s like your car’s “check engine” light going on; you need to address it. But don’t worry, we’ve got your back.

Missing Icons: When Good Icons Go Missing

Think of a missing icon as a misplaced remote—you know it’s around somewhere, you just have to find it.

Functional Aspects

When an icon goes missing from your WordPress Dashboard, the first step is to determine if it’s a plugin or theme issue. Deactivate all your plugins and switch to a default WordPress theme. If the icon reappears, reactivate each plugin one by one to identify the culprit.

Expert Tip

If an icon is missing, try clearing your browser cache and cookies. Sometimes, these can interfere with the icons showing up as they should.

Changing Icons: A Fresh Coat of Paint

Visual Language

Changing an icon is like redecorating your room. It’s the same space, but it feels entirely different.

Functional Aspects

To change an icon, you can use Custom CSS or plugins designed to allow this level of customization. With Custom CSS, you’ll need to find the specific code for the icon you wish to change and alter its properties. Plugins like ‘Admin Menu Editor’ offer a more user-friendly interface to accomplish the same task.

Expert Tip

Before making any changes to your icons, take a screenshot of your current Dashboard layout. If you end up not liking the new icons, you’ll have a visual reference to help you revert to the old ones.

In the digital realm, especially in platforms like WordPress, troubleshooting is a necessary skill. Whether it’s a missing icon you need to hunt down or an icon makeover you’re after, you’re not powerless. Equipped with these troubleshooting tips, are you ready to become your own WordPress mechanic?

Navigating the WordPress Dashboard can be like exploring a new city. It’s a lot to take in at first, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll find that it offers a lot of hidden gems and shortcuts to make your life easier. From basic to advanced icons, customization features, and troubleshooting tips, the Dashboard is your ultimate guide to managing a successful WordPress site.

Dashboard Icons for Mobile Users: Navigate Like a Pro on the Go

Just like ordering a coffee-to-go, managing your WordPress site on mobile is all about convenience. But, as we know, smaller screens mean a few changes in the layout and functionality. Fear not! You can still have a full-fledged WordPress experience on your mobile device.

Differences on Mobile: Same Tune, Different Lyrics

Imagine squeezing into a compact car after driving an SUV. Everything’s there; it’s just a bit more…cozy. On a mobile device, the WordPress Dashboard icons will generally be hidden under a “hamburger menu” (those three horizontal lines at the top corner). Tapping on it will reveal the full menu, giving you access to the various sections.

Expert Tip

Because of the smaller screen size, you may find that some elements are simplified or abbreviated. Learning the mobile iconography will be key to effective navigation.

Tips for Mobile Users: Turn Constraints into Opportunities

Visual Language

Navigating on mobile is like hiking with a lightweight backpack—you only bring what’s essential.

Functional Aspects

Zooming: Use the pinch-to-zoom function to get a better look at icons if needed.

Shortcuts: Add your WordPress Dashboard to your home screen for quick access.

Switch to Desktop View: If you need access to a feature that’s tricky to manage on mobile, switch to the desktop version of the site for a moment.

Expert Tip

Remember that some plugins might not be fully optimized for mobile use. Before relying solely on mobile management, test to ensure that all necessary features work smoothly.

The WordPress Dashboard on mobile may be a scaled-down version of its desktop counterpart, but it doesn’t have to be any less powerful. With some adjustments and a focus on what’s essential, you can manage your site effectively, even when you’re miles away from your computer. Ready to take WordPress wherever you go?

The WordPress Dashboard is your one-stop-shop for managing your website. Whether you’re accessing it from a desktop or a mobile device, understanding the icons and functionalities can make your life significantly easier. Customization, shortcuts, and troubleshooting—once you get these down, you’re well on your way to becoming a WordPress pro.

Tips for WordPress Beginners

You’re new, and that’s okay. Here are some tips to get you started. WordPress is a powerful tool, and understanding the Dashboard icons is your first step toward mastering it. The key lies in familiarization, timely updates, and efficient use of plugins and shortcuts. With these beginner tips, you’re not so much a novice as you are a budding WordPress connoisseur.

Comparison with Other CMS Dashboards

Comparison with Other CMS Dashboards: A Tale of Three Cities

Choosing a Content Management System (CMS) is like choosing a new city to live in. Each has its own culture, language, and landmarks—in the case of CMS, Dashboard icons. So, how does the user-friendly WordPress compare with Joomla and Drupal?

WordPress vs Joomla: Friendly Neighbors

Visual Language

If WordPress is like a cozy suburban town, then Joomla is the neighboring city with a more industrial feel. Both are welcoming but offer different experiences.

Functional Aspects

WordPress: Known for its user-friendliness, the Dashboard icons are intuitive and simple to understand.

Joomla: While also user-friendly, Joomla uses terms like “Modules” and “Components,” which might require some getting used to.

Learning Curve

Joomla offers great flexibility but might take a bit more time to master. WordPress, on the other hand, is great for beginners.

WordPress vs Drupal: The Big City Comparison

Visual Language

Imagine WordPress as New York, known for its liveliness and accessibility. Drupal is like San Francisco—equally compelling but with steeper hills to climb.

Functional Aspects

WordPress: Icons are straightforward, aiming to make content creation as easy as possible.

Drupal: It offers more customization but with a level of complexity. You’ll encounter terms like “Blocks” and “Nodes.”

Learning Curve

Drupal is tailored for those who have some experience in website development. WordPress is more forgiving for those who are just starting out.

The Verdict: Choose Your Adventure

Each CMS offers a unique experience, complete with its own set of Dashboard icons and functionalities. Your choice depends on your needs, technical skill, and the type of website you’re aiming to build. Curious to try them all? Go ahead, the world of CMS is your oyster!

You’ve reached the end of our WordPress Dashboard Icons guide. Congratulations! You’re now equipped to maneuver through the dashboard like a pro. Are you ready to take your WordPress skills to the next level?

Good artists copy; great artists steal.

* This is a favorite phrase of Jobs, but he is (mis)quoting Pablo Picasso. “Lesser artists borrow; great artists steal” is similarly attributed to Igor Stravinsky, but both sayings may well originate in T. S. Eliot’s dictum: “Immature poets imitate; mature poets steal; bad poets deface what they take, and good poets make it into something better, or at least something different.”

Global climate change is a serious issue that can only be solved with eduction and awareness. This is where you come into the picture. You can help educate the public, so everyone can do his small lifestyle change that may result in a massive global reduction of green house gases.

I compiled here a list of advertisements that are designed to raise awareness to the issue of global climate change. Hopefully these ads will inspire you to create more ads and distribute the ones already created. Email them, blog them, share them any way you can.

No offense, but why all this effort to deal with a problem that MIGHT happen in 2080, instead of helping with causes that are having an effect right now? Darfur, global starvation, terrorism, and the like are all issues happening right now. But the big issue is that the climate might change in 70 years? Why does anyone think that it’s been static this whole time until the 1900’s? And lastly, why hasn’t anyone learned their lesson? The big fear in the 70’s was global cooling, then it was global warming, and now, just to make sure they have their angles covered, it’s “global climate change”. This way, no matter what happens, it’s a reason to freak out.

Sorry, I know you’re trying to help, but humanity’s resources can better be spent fixing real problems in the here and now, and not freak out over something that isn’t conclusively determined.

But, global warming is a much bigger issue than any of the problems you mentioned. Plus some of the issues we have today, like starvation and terrorism will only increase with global warming.

The already poor areas of the world will become so dry that even more people will starve. Think about millions of refugees flooding richer nations. It is all interlinked.

The other problem is that with global climate change we will be doing damage to our Earth that is not recoverable. If we lose biodiversity it will be gone and we can’t bring it back.

Fighting CO2 emissions is more of an extremely effective prevention method rather than a fix to an already existing problem. If we spend a little effort and money on preventing major climate change, we won’t have to deal with enormous global issues in the next 50 or so years. So, I think it is a good use of humanity’s resources.

If you don’t believe in global climate change I don’t blame you.

First of all the science is not exact behind it. No scientist can tell for sure what will happen exactly. It is way too complicated for any climate model. However it is very probable that it will happen. The same way as you don’t jump off a cliff, even though you can’t be sure you won’t die from doing it, let’s not risk and see what happens to our only habitable planet.

Secondly, there were so many different climate change predictions in the past as you mentioned that later turned out to be untrue that it is easy to think this is just another one of those. But, the difference is again in numbers. 99.9% of scientists agree on this specific issue today. And, the majority of the rest are either paid by different lobbies to disagree.

The big problem is that there is a lot of money behind disproving climate change. The biggest industries in the world are all contributing to CO2, so any legislation against it would harm their profit. Therefore they spend a lot of money on misinformation and campaigning against it. On the other hand there is little money in fighting CO2. It mostly relies on conscience. And, we have little of that in governments mainly ruled by big company interests.

All in all, we may be completely wrong on climate change and all our efforts on reducing CO2 may be go in vain, but if we are right and we don’t do anything we are big trouble.

The closest recently discovered Earth like planet is 25 lighyears away. Not much chance we get there in the next 500 years.

Hi Ivan,
There are a couple of issues I have to take with your post, so hopefully, I am not too rude

“99.9% of scientists agree on this specific issue today.”
Honestly, I care very little how many “scientists” believe in global warming. It’s really not all that impressive to me that anthropologists, biologists, physicists and other scientists unrelated to the climate believe in global warming. I take their opinions on the climatology with the same grain of salt that I would if I heard their opinions on child rearing or dating.

What is impressive to me is that some of the top climatologists in the world do not believe that there is anything to get into a bunch about.
Such as Richard Lindsen (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17997788/site/newsweek/) or John Christy (http://www.reason.com/news/show/34939.html).

Also, just because an idea is widely supported, says nothing of whether or not it is true.
There have been many “scientific” ideas that people assumed were true because they were widely supported, but turned out to be a load of garbage.
Like, eugenics, for instance. It was a great big bunch of psuedo-science, but if you questioned it, you were demonized for impeding progress.

“The big problem is that there is a lot of money behind disproving climate change.” and “On the other hand there is little money in fighting CO2.”

The first one is a red herring, and the second statement is wrong.

Again, the amount of money behind any idea has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not it is true.
There is a lot of money behind the movement to keep people off of drugs. Does that mean everyone should pick up a needle and a heroin habit?
No, because the money behind an idea are not related to whether or not that idea is right or wrong.

Also, the global warming issue also reveals alot of people’s prejudices. For instance, do you really believe that any corporation, if they KNOW that there is a global catastrophe coming, that they’re not going to do anything to help, all because they want some money?
That’s ridiculous.
No group of people would damn themselves to a terrible world and kill millions of people, all because they make an extra 100 million this quarter.

Greed can make people do terrible things, but asking everyone to believe that a large group of people all know the truth that the world will pretty much end, and then say “Naw, we need the money”.

About the second statement, you’re quite wrong. There are numerous industries that will benefit from this, and there is quite a lot of money on both sides.

The funny thing is, the side arguing for global warming has the most to win, and the most to lose. Big oil, no matter what happens, will be a thriving enterprise. Oil pretty much goes into almost everything, and even if they migrated all fuel to seawater, Big Oil would be a profitable thriving business.
However, the folks who want to sell carbon credits, and get paid to enforce the crazy nutbag laws all stand to make a lot of money, and if they don’t get what they want, they’re going to lose that opportunity.

And here’s the thing, you may be okay with being wrong about climate change, but at what cost?
What damage are you willing to do to the third world, all because our society suffers from the guilt of success?

For instance, was it worth the death of thousands, if not millions of people from the third world because of food spoilage? When they prohibit the use of cheap refrigerants such as freon, and the food all goes bad, and they die, which is the greater loss?
The life right now, or the maybe life in 80 years?
The same happened and is happening with DDT and malaria in Africa.

What the climate change war is going to do is keep poor people poorer, and keep the industrialized world ahead.

Now, the question is, are you willing to stake someones life on it if you’re wrong?

Personally, I am willing to for sure save some people now, rather than hoping I am having an effect in the future.

I think Arabic calligraphy is a form of art that has superseeded any other culture in its category. It’s highly complex and has many layers of meaning.

I won’t to go into details. You start doing that here if you wish. Allow me to just touch upon the subject and show you a few interesting examples.

This style is my personal favorite because I’m an animal lover. It’s called zoomorphic calligraphy and some believe it’s developed because of the restriction of illustrating living beings according to muslim traditions.

The example below is a highly popular style where carefully layed out miniature text makes up a bigger sentence. Both the small and big text are related and usually verses from the Koran.

The one below showcases an ancient manuscript from Iraq. Note that in those times using black and red inks to write was a must. Later the red dots were replaced with other symbols that need not to be red.

Finally let me show you a modern script that can be found on contemporary buildings. This example below is a piece from a long text that goes all around the House of Koran. Note the geometric simplicity of the script.

Latin font types seriously influence the contemporary Arabic typography. As you can see below sometimes latin fonts are mimiced to create similar looks.

Arabic script and arabesque design is largely ignored outside the Middle East. Unlike many other languages that are used extensively as design elements even in the West, Arabic didn’t enter the mainstream culture. Japanese characters are all over girls as tattoos and t-shirts designs for example. Have you seen anybody with an Arab script tattoo?

I think the main reason Arabic calligraphy didn’t penetrate the pop culture is because it’s very closely associated with religion and the usage of these styles may be a sensitive issue.

Excuse my shallow views, but I think this is unfortunate, because Arabic calligraphy has a beautiful texture, which can be appreciated even if you don’t read the text. I fully understand however that for muslims the script means so much more than just pretty design. The Koran and the style of the text is holy and there is no room for reinterpreting these visual elements.
