Neon colors are vibrant and bold, making them an excellent choice for many designs. However, using neon colors can be challenging, especially if you are not familiar with the color theory behind them. In this guide, we will walk you through the basics of neon colors, their characteristics, and how to use them effectively.

What Are Neon Colors?

Neon colors are bright, intense hues that appear to glow under certain lighting conditions. These colors are created by adding a small amount of noble gas to a tube filled with fluorescent chemicals. When an electric current passes through the gas, it ionizes, causing the fluorescent chemicals to emit light. The result is a brilliant, glowing color that is sure to grab attention.

Characteristics of Neon Colors

Neon colors have several unique characteristics that set them apart from other colors. They are incredibly bright and saturated, making them perfect for attracting attention. They also have a high level of contrast, which can make them difficult to combine with other colors. Lastly, neon colors can appear differently under different lighting conditions, so it is essential to consider the environment in which they will be used.

Using Neon Colors Effectively

When using neon colors, it is crucial to use them in moderation. Too much neon can be overwhelming and distract from the intended message. Instead, consider using neon colors as accents to draw attention to specific elements of your design. Additionally, it is important to choose complementary colors that will balance and harmonize with the neon colors. This can help prevent the colors from clashing and creating a jarring effect.

Conclusion

Neon colors are an excellent way to add a pop of color and vibrancy to any design. However, using neon colors can be challenging, and it is essential to understand their unique characteristics and how to use them effectively. By following the tips outlined in this guide, you can create stunning designs that are sure to grab attention and stand out in a crowd.

In summary, we hope that this guide has provided you with valuable insights on using neon colors. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to reach out to us. Remember, effective use of neon colors can make your designs truly unforgettable.

Sketch is one of the Figma alternatives with a free trial of only 30 days. Sketch has UI resources including wireframe kits, templates, mockups, concepts, icons, vector tools, useful extensions and plugins. Most amazing feature of Sketch is supportive plugins and prebuilt themes. You can design with pixels keeping everything vector. And files in this software can be exported in different sizes. It’s an all in one designing software. But it’s only limited to mac and has only one license per device with a one time yearly payment of $99.Even if it has a wide set of tools, it also has some drawbacks. There is no doubt sketch works well as a graphic designing software but falls behind for some features. And if you want a graphic designing software totally free for lifetime, Sketch is not the one to recommend.

UXPin graphic designing software is outstanding with its wireframing feature. You can install it on any platform. It has collaboration, feedback management, interactive elements, mobile interface, mockup creation, page linking, presentation tools, prototype creation, revision history, screen capture, and wireframe creation. You can perfectly maintain your color palettes and image in this software. Built-in prototypes in this designing software can be easily shared by sending a link. But the interface of this graphic designing software is very hard to operate and understand. This designing software is free for only 14 days. Pricing after the trial period for every user on UXPin starts at $15.00 per month. Even if it has some good features, it’s not free forever.

You have to hand it to Adobe, they really do spend a lot of time dreaming up ways to generate training material for Creative Suite users. The latest of these is the curiously-named SWAPP iPad app, which will be made available on the App Store in a series of editions, each including up to twelve user-contributed tutorials and examples of work. The first of these is now available for free download. If you’re interested in contributing, you’ll need InDesign CS6, Folio Producer and Folio Builder, and will begin by downloading provided InDesign templates and assets. It’s potentially a great way to promote your work, especially since you can put whatever you want on a page attached your tutorial, thereby singing your praises and linking to your site and social media presences. An example is shown in the first image below.

After a few hours of using it, my suspicions were confirmed. Every release of InDesign has brought new and improved features and speed bumps, but none have brought more than Adobe’s latest offering of its flagship page layout application.

While InDesign CS4 offers a host of small improvements and additions, such as inline notes, an improved Story Editor, contact-sheet placement, and a new zoom method, and numerous other small additions, I’m going to focus on some of the major additions that will interest virtually every graphic designer and production artist.

These new features include a new graphical user interface, rotatation of page views, smart layout features, Kuler integration, Flash export, and more.

Now it’s possible. Now it’s easy and fun. In this simple tutorial you will learn how to use improved bullets and numbering InDesign’s feature to get numbers on your tickets. Our goal will be to create 1000 tickets, numbered from number 1 to 1000. Of course, you are not limited to this number. You can create as many as your like.

We will start with ticket dimensions: 80x30mm. This is important because we are going to impose these tickets on A4 paper. After some calculation I found 15 tickets per page works OK for me – 3 columns and 5 rows. To make room for 1000 tickets we need 67 A4 pages (1000/15 = ~67).

Create new A4 InDesign CS3 document with 67 non facing pages in landscape orientation.

Open pages palette and double click on A master. Make text frame with dimensions matching dimensions of ticket and place it in upper left corner on master page.

Go – Type – Show hidden characters (make it active).

Type some text in newly created text frame and after the first line press Enter 2 times to get 2 paragraph symbols as on image below.

Select second paragraph symbol and lower font size for a couple of points. Open Paragraph styles palette and Option/Alt click on new style icon located at the bottom of palette to create new style. Name your new style to something like “to change”. Leave all settings and click OK. Click on the “to change” style in paragraph palette while you still have selected paragraph symbol.

Now make duplicates of text frame to fill A master page. You will end up with 15 tickets.

If you open page 1 you will find that text frames are not editable. To make all text frames editable select page 1 in pages palette and hold shift key when you click on last page in document (page 67). Open flyout menu and choose “Override All Master Page Items”.

Now go to page 1 and select second paragraph symbol of the first text frame located in upper left corner.

Option/Alt click on bullets and numbering button located in control panel. In the B&N window make following settings:

List type: numbers

List: choose New… name it, and leave both items checked. This is very important step. Each text frame is one story. “Continue across stories” option will allow continuous numbering across all text frames in document.

Format: 1,2,3,4

Number field: default is ^#.^t You can play a lot with this field.
^# – represent auto number
^t – represent tab
No.^# (customized)

Mode: continue from previous number

Open Paragraph styles palette and Alt click on new style icon at the bottom of palette. Name style to something like “numbering”. Click on the new created style name in paragraph palette just to be sure that you applied style to selection.

Deselect everything.
All we have to do now is to call Find/Change to help us with numbering process – Edit – Find/Change and make settings like on image below. Click on Change all button and watch the magic.

Delete unwanted tickets from last page if you want exactly 1000 tickets.
To create crop marks select all text frames on master page and apply CropMarks script with “each object selected”.
That’s it Indy lovers.
The post Numbering tickets (stickers) with InDesign CS3 first appeared on Creative Bits.

InDesign’s nested style feature is very powerful, but not too many people I’ve spoke with have really put it to use. It can save you hours of wasted time formatting. For example, consider a glossary style entry:

word (n.) definition goes here

The first step would be to create a character style sheet for the bold text, and another for the italic text. Specify ONLY the attributes that should be specific to this style. This doesn’t just apply to nested styles either. It’s always applicable. If you set the style to use Helvetica Bold but do not give it a specific point size you’ll be able to use that style on any text and it will automatically match the point size of the text around it. I’ve got a file that uses both Univers and Univers Condensed at 8, 10, and 11 pt in footnotes, sidebars and body text. I only need 2 bold stylesheets. One for Univers Bold and one for Univers Bold Condensed….got it? cool.

So you’ve got your bold and italic stylesheets. Now make a paragraph stylesheet that will represent the definition portion of the text. Pick a basic font and a size, leading, space before and after, etc.

Now we’ll make the nested part of that paragraph style. In the Drop Caps and Nested Styles section of the paragraph stylesheet settings click New Nested Style. You need to choose a character style and specify how long to use it. You can use a style “up to” or “through” any number of words, character, space, or special character. Note: the default is “Words”. There are other options in a pull down menu but you can also type anything you want in that box! It could be a colon or an em space…whatever!

For my example, the nested styles look like this:
Bold through 1 Words
Ital through 1 Words

After that it reverts back to the original paragraph style specs. (Hint: use a non breaking space if you want multiple words to be styled as 1 word.)
The post InDesign nested styles first appeared on Creative Bits.

Bloated documents?
Need to send a big document over email?

These are all things that may occur rarely or often depending on how much you use software as complicated as InDesign. This is where the Indesign interchange format comes in.

Files hold a legacy of multiple alterations and saves and can get bogged down with surplus date that bloat files and can in some cases cause corruption. So what we need to do is strip out all that flab and create a lean, mean printing machine.

Simply open your file in InDesign and got File/Export then in the format drop down select Indesign Interchange and click save. This creates a stripped down XML version of your file with all the formatting and linking data intact. This file can now be sent to anyone else with InDesign and as long as they have all the links at their end (images, fonts etc.) they can open the file as if it were a standard INDD file.

Alternatively you can reopen it locally and re-save it as a leaner version of the original file that will be less likely to grow tiresome corruption in the future.

I have included a zipped file of how this works with the original InDesign file, a PDF for reference and and INX that I created. As you can see the InDesign file is 416k and the INX is a measly 60k.

To follow up on THIS TIP about drag & drop with InDesign – You can copy an Adobe Illustrator object from AI and paste it right into ID which makes it an InDesign object where you can color it, give it a stroke, or further adjust the bezier curves. ID will not however accept objects with a gradient, it just removes the gradient when you paste the path into your document. You just need to make sure that you have a few preferences set correctly.

In Adobe InDesign’s preferences, at the bottom of the General prefs you will find 3 check boxes.

Make sure that Prefer PDF When Pasting is NOT checked, Copy PDF to Clipboard IS checked, and Preserve Text Attributes When Pasting is NOT checked. We’re not done yet. Now we move on to the Illustrator portion.

Did you know that you can drag any file ID can place normally right from an application, or the finder?

If you have a folder full of images and text, select them all and drag them to an open ID window. Wherever your mouse is when you let go, that’s where ID will start displaying the images/text (it will cascade them down the page). As you are dragging the files from the finder, you should notice a ghosted icon for each file over the ID window as you drag it around.

You can also open a MS Word file with tables in it, select it all and drag it to an open ID window – which will keep the Word Table intact & editable. (QUITE HANDY!).

This tip is a great time-saver if you have a lot of images to place all contained in one folder. Once they’re in ID, you can size them and move them around normally.

One of those features is ACCURATE high resolution graphic display of images in your documents. Unfortunately, the more graphics you add, the slower InDesign becomes to work in. One easy way to put a little kick back into ID is to adjust the display prefs of the document you’re working in. Simply go to the View menu and adjust the display setting to ‘Typical.’ Your images will still display quite well, but ID’s speed will increase dramatically!

Another quick way to speed InDesign up is to keep the Navigator and Links palette closed unless you’re using them. Both take up valuable resources to keep open and are largely unnecessary to keep open all the time.
