Hide files and folders in the Mac OS X Finder

ninja Finder

If you share a computer with someone, or your office computer is accessible to prying eyes and you want to hide a file or folder of private documents, it’s quite easy to do without the need to download any software.

Let’s say you want to hide a folder in your Documents folder called “MyStuff.” You can do it simply by launching the Terminal (found in your Utilities folder inside Applications) and typing the following:
chflags hidden ~/Documents/MyStuff

Once your MyStuff folder is hidden, it will not appear in the Finder, but it will still be accessible via the Finder’s Go>Go to Folder (Command + Shift + G) and typing in the path to the folder.

To unhide your MyStuff folder, simply type the following:
chflags nohidden ~/Documents/MyStuff

If using the Terminal isn’t your thing, you can download Hideaway, which does the same thing, only you just click a few buttons instead of typing code into the Terminal.

I'v been using Xray Vision for awhile. It's simple to use in a Finder-like window although it's not free (only 2 bucks). http://www.hamsoftengineering.com/products/xrayvision/xrayvision.html

A weakness of this method is that (at least in Leopard, I haven't had a chance to try it in SL yet) the sheet which appears when you press Cmd-Shift-G or select "Go To Folder..." contains the last path you typed into it. You'd have to remember to type a different one afterwards, every time you accessed your hidden folder that way.

Best way to do this?

Install Windows via bootcamp and never launch OSX again!

I have one other way, which is actually not a very safe way but it works for most of the people, I simply give extension to the folder: for example MyStuff will be renamed into suport.app. Now the MAC will consider it as application so by double clicking it will give error, but advance users can right click and open the folder content... which is not yet very common...

Any how nice terminal command. Thanks
