Possibly the coolest feature in Photoshop CS5: Content-Aware fill

content aware fill

This one feature is such a time saver it is alone enough to convince many to upgrade.

I don't see anything here that Paint'11 cannot do in a few dozen easy steps!

Great. I can now realize my dream of becoming a long haul truck driver. Or janitor. Or digger of ditches. As computers and programs become more ubiquitous and powerful, I see my specialization of Photo retouching/separation becoming a nostalgic memory. Soon, they will speak of the photo-retoucher just like people who reminisce about milkmen who delivered milk to your front door.

*sob* *cry* *wimper*

Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.

Ivan's picture

You're not alone. More and more people voice their fears of the future and what it holds in terms of technological developments. Nobody knows how we will handle the singularity.

truck or cab driver seems interesting for us designers xD

These things might make photo re-touching easier, but there are still people out there who will not want to be bothered with learning how to use the content-aware fill.

I'm sure there are many other things out there in the world that have become easier because of technology advancements - doesn't mean that simply because technology maybe made heart surgery easier that I want to take the time to do it myself to save a couple bucks. I still have to learn that technology (and human anatomy... lol).

Technology supposedly made the production of ads doable by any person without any graphic design training whatsoever (*cough*Word*cough*). Word hasn't put any graphic artists out of business that I'm aware of.

If you COULD do heart surgery on yourself, you probably would! Obviously, we can't do surgery on ourselves.

When we become users of a new technology, time and again we discover it is not the quality that sells but rather the savings of time and money.

Typographers of 15 years ago. Decimated. The profession simply doesn't exist any longer. Not because the GUI layout application set type better. In fact, Quark/InDesigns typesetting abilities are far below that of any typographic machines they replaced.

Drum Scanner Operators. Once again, decimated. Once again, not because typical desktop scanners were better. They are FAR worse. The final death of the Scanner Operator was the introduction of high resolution digital cameras and most critics agree these devices do not capture the range that film cameras do. Once again, it was savings of time and money.

So, lets not think quality is the determining factor. Quality has never has been a factor and will not be in the future. Time and money. Time and money.

Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.

Ivan's picture

If you're talking mainstream that's correct. But high-end and quality is always in demand in for the few who want it and can afford it.

Regarding the digital vs analog photography I thought digital completely caught up already. I frankly can't really imagine that after developing and scanning you get better results than with direct record of color data. The depth of color of today's high-end digital is unbelievable.

my friend and his wife was fired recently and opened a "Graphic Design" Office

none of them has any real graphic design knowledge, they only have a PC, Excel skills and... Photoshop!

xD

yes I'm brazilian xD

Okay Mr. Gloomy. :P (Just ribbin' ya).

Honestly it's a perception thing between your perception and mine... but where you see jobs lost, I see jobs shifted or redefined.

(PS - the heart surgery analogy was meant as in if I had a friend who needed it. Although, who knows, maybe one day decades from now, there will be a self-heart surgery kit... haha!)

I want to watch more!

Watch the video closely - not nearly as impressive as the guy is trying to make it sound. He's using all the old seminar tricks - small file size, videotaping from a distance, random touch up areas (sky, grass, desert - etc...), etc... Watch the first part - you can see artifacts on every spot he "fixes". This might be good for amateur work, but this is not replacing any of us. Professional work will still require touch-up after the content fill.

Ivan's picture

That's correct. It's only a starting point. It's not magic just yet. Still a big time-saver.

also keep in mind that they probably went through a big batch of pictures trying to find one that could highlight the improved tools best. and i'm sure that there may have been moments where they made an adjustment that just didn't quite work right that got edited out.

i remember when they first introduced content-aware scaling and the healing brush and the demos they did worked *far* better than most real life applications.

not to say i don't use both of those tools fairly regularly and that i'm not happy to have them (and looking forward to the improvements). just that demos *always* do their best to show the product in its best light. don't get too caught up in the "amazing" part and think it will replace a good photo editor. it'll make your job easier and let kids who "photoshop" their friends into other images do it quicker and easier (i would *never* do that).

that said, if you're seeing some infringement on your business model here, it's time to proactively shift your business model to stay ahead of the curve. better tools will be coming down the road.

What about copyrighted products with 'Water Marks' like Website Designs, Logos & most effectively Photos for sale.
One more thing I was just wondering if I give it a face of a girl, will it be able to create the whole body d-_+b

Thanks!

Yes, it will be easier to get rid of watermarks, but that much.

The girl thing won't work. :)

I was hoping someone had built this feature in a camera or a mobile app today. For example, while shopping for a couch you can point your camera and let it "fill" your living room around it.

gwells's picture

ooh. i think this content-aware stuff is a lot more sophisticated than i originally realized...

I wouldn't be to worried about the loss of work. There are lots of people that wouldn't buy Phototshop for casual use when the price tag is generally a pretty big one. It looks really cool though! I can't wait to get a hold of it!

GIMP has this feature too.

When you think about it, CS4 already has some amazing, cool features: content-aware scaling, panorama stitching, auto-alignment, 3D tools, and more. But how many people are even using these things? Most Photoshop users that I know are barely scratching the surface. (And this is why so many people complain that Photoshop is overpriced bloatware, too.) Personally I think doomsday for creative Photoshop users is still a ways off....

Hopefully, MS Paint will have this in the future. That would be awesome!

Looks like a great tool, that no doubt has its limits.

Having seen this displayed at the PMA Australia I was pretty impressed, and perhaps a little scared. But like all technology, we have to learn to adapt, or go the way of the dinosaur.
I think creative retouchers will still be in demand despite this - as some pointed out, it does a great job a lot of the time, but not perfect, and not all of the time.
