Finding design inspiration outside the digital world

With just a few years under your belt as a graphic designer, you’ve no doubt come across a time or two when you experienced a complete and total lack of creativity; a sort of designer’s block, if you will. If it hasn’t happened to you, you either haven’t pushed bounds of creativity yet, or you’ve been darn lucky. Either way, it WILL happen.

The best way to fight it is to seek-out and find creativity in places and things that you wouldn’t normally look for it. The key is getting your butt out from in front of the computer screen and into the real world. For some, it’s easy to do – for others, it’s not as simple. Where to go to look for inspiration? And where to find it once you get there?

Plancast Penguin Development Process

I was hired about three months ago to design a logo and consult on the brand identity for Plancast, a local San Francisco start-up founded by Mark Hendrickson and Jay Marcyes. As you can probably guess from the name, Plancast a way to broadcast your upcoming plans to your friends; or as it’s often described, Foursquare for the future. The site is exceptionally easy and helpful, and I encourage you to check it out.

By the time I joined on Plancast was up and running, but they were without a logo or distinctive visuals. I began work in December and we agreed on the finished logo a few weeks ago. The project was easily the hardest I have ever completed — as well as the most fulfilling. I almost destroyed myself developing this logo and I am really excited to share the process with you here.

20 Identical Logo Designs – Copy or Coincidence?

Plagiarism has become a widespread problem. People often plagiarize stuff that is easily and readily available. Be it the education field or the corporate world, the curse of plagiarism is prevalent. The same nuisance is existent the logo design industry. You will witness hundreds of logo designs that either resemble other logos or are a downright copy. But I wonder the reason behind it…is it done intentionally or it’s a coincidence? Irrespective of how you come up with a logo design, you have to make sure it does not inadvertently fall into the parameters of logo theft.

The risks of plagiarism in logo designs:

Logo plagiarism is an ever increasing nuisance for logo designers, especially with the advent of the internet. With a simple click or just a little search on Google, anyone in the world can copy your corporate logos. In fact, Google itself has not been spared of this unethical practice. Google has recently warned a Chinese search engine to change its logo design as it is a clear copy of world famous Google logo.
