The PBS Off Book series of short videos on such as topics as The Art of Logo Design and Glitch Art, constitute one of the better YouTube channels. The latest iteration, The Art of Animation and Motion Graphics, is devoted to the history and practice of animation and motion graphics, and while a worthy effort, obviously can’t go into a lot of detail in just seven minutes. Something that definitely deserved more than a brief mention was the work of French animator Émile Cohl, who apparently created the first fully animated film more than 100 years ago. I included that movie, Fantasmagorie, in an earlier post devoted to Cohl on the Graphic Design Forum site. If you’re involved in animation, you need to be familiar with the groundbreaking work of this almost-forgotten French animator.
