Adobe InDesign CS4 first look

JimD's picture

Adobe InDesign CS4When I launched InDesign CS4 for the first time, it took all of about ten seconds to see that I was going to like what I found. After a few hours of using it, my suspicions were confirmed. Every release of InDesign has brought new and improved features and speed bumps, but none have brought more than Adobe’s latest offering of its flagship page layout application.

While InDesign CS4 offers a host of small improvements and additions, such as inline notes, an improved Story Editor, contact-sheet placement, and a new zoom method, and numerous other small additions, I’m going to focus on some of the major additions that will interest virtually every graphic designer and production artist.

These new features include a new graphical user interface, rotatation of page views, smart layout features, Kuler integration, Flash export, and more.

yeah, i'm psyched. my company has a subscription, so technically we could upgrade as soon as it comes out. but i know they won't let me upgrade that quickly. :(

Illustrator is NICE!

AI CS4 FINALLY brings multi-artboard (multi-page) documents, including bleed settings! All three major print apps have a lot of really nice small feature updates, additions and changes - making the whole suite a pretty good upgrade.

This seems like a very

This seems like a very strange move. Increasingly the line is blurred between ID and AI; you'd think Adobe would want to keep them separate? (i.e. more $$$ for them?)

multi artboard

It is a different concept in Illustrator.

here you can create artboards with different sizes, one for a banner, one for an ad and so on.

Instead of having 10 different files for each variation on a theme you can create all those variations in one Illustrator file.

In InDesign you can choose what artboard you want to place, every illustrator artboard can be imported seperately.

in Illustrator you can export every artboard as a seperate file so that you can make a choice for a particular situation.

So it is a little bit different from the multipage function in InDesign.

A nice feature in the new Illustrator is for copying content from one illustrator file to another.

With the two documents open (they open as tabs) you can select the element you want to copy and drag it on the tab of the second file, the second file will become the active file and now you relaese the element where you want it to be.

No more copy and paste.

Already?

Am I the only one that thinks it's strange that CS4 is already out? Seems like I spent the money to upgrade to CS3 not too long ago.

adobe has been on an 18

adobe has been on an 18 month cycle for a while now. i think this is pretty much right on schedule.

Mintsauce's picture

I feel it...

It feels like yesterday! I had to check my calendar this morning and yeah, it's 18 months all right. It might be merchandising... Think about all those - CS3 in 24 hours, CS3 for Dummies etc. Now they have to design new covers. If the changes aren't so huge you can always skip to CS5. The upgrade price will be the same.

plugz's picture

Nah, CS3 was rushed out the door.

They had to integrate Macromedia and also deal with Apple switching to x86 processors and a new OS so it's been a long time coming. PS has never matched version 7 since it became part of the Adobe CS Suite IMHO.

It'll be interesting to see how this stacks up against Quark.

Thanks for the quick review.

Thanks for the quick review. Multiple document handling is sweet. It's worth the upgrade for sure.

Question is, how fast production houses and other agencies will upgrade, or shall we save stuff in CS3 format regardless that we have CS4?

The Ad Mad's picture

you're right ivan

We generally work on a previous released format (right now is Cs2, and I guess even with CS4 out, we'll still use CS2 for a while, it is safer for sure)

Version Cue

Can anyone tell me if they have sorted out the issue of version cue not running on Intel based macs yet?

With loads of projects on the go and a number of us working on them at multiple times, version cue was the daddys nuts on the MacPro etc before the Intel chip. Now on my MacBookPro it has been a dead bit of software since upgrading to CS3

I wish I could tell you

But Version Cue is one of the things I turn off in all my installs of CS. Sorry.

Could you turn it on / install and tell me?

We used to use it all the time when it ran on our old mac pro server.

Now with the intel chip VC CS3 doesn't work. I don't want to waste my money if they haven't sorted it out in CS4...

...I have been drilling down the forums and trying to find out if it works - nothing yet
