And this applies to most parts of Europe and the Middle East and Asia as far as I can tell. What can we do!?

Unfortunately this happens not just in the USA. Luckily there are exceptions where people spend time to rebuilt the old-style and make it new and shiny again. I guess it's the awareness of such things to protect our environment and prevent this bad graphics. ; )
A little exagerated but so true...and not to talk about the new all-look-alike web2.0 kinda logos. I mean, we're over glossy reflections!!!
On a second thought, there are times at work when the client is the one pushing for the 'latest trend', and sometimes you got no other choice than giving him what he's asking for :S
The Ad Mad
Epic rant.
That's brilliant and so true.

What a f*cking eloquent gent whose lips, unfortunately, spew a brutal frankness.

I ESPECIALLY like the "About" link...the humble beginnings!
**warning: graphic language in the website above** (but it is funny as hell!)
"Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible."
— Frank Zappa
"Art -- the one achievement of Man which has made the long trip up from all fours seem well advised." - James Thurber
Hell, the same applies to movies, music, banner ads, book bags...
Sadly I think it's more about the money and the genericazation of America. It's funny because I was taking pictures of some old signs last weekend and my dad asked me why and I said "because they're disappearing." Open your eyes and watch the landscape change, it's gradual but it's happening.
All art is subjectional, my friends. It's funny this guy takes one bad sign redesign and decides it speaks for the country as a whole. ;)
I see way too much gorgeous and amazing design work out there to believe this country is f*cked (graphically speaking).
That WAS a horrible redesign, though! Reminds me of one of my first design experiments when I was just learning how to use Illustrator and Quark sooooo many years ago.
yes, it's all subjective, and that's why there are still so many velvet elvis prints sold on the side of the road today.
that doesn't mean that replacing monets with velvises shoudln't be considered bad for culture. ;)
SOME HIGH SCHOOL KID LEARNED HOW TO USE THE COMPUTER AND THINKS HE/SHE IS A GRAPHIC DESIGNER. :-(
..in a strange sorta way!

I am not Steve Ballmer pretending not to be me!
I am in the Sign business for over 10 years but have been in the graphic design way before that and it just kills me to see so many sign companies produce jobs with absolutely horrible graphics without knowledge of layout and design in respect to both print and signs.
On the other hand, I continue to get inspired by some very nice sign and graphic works out there.
I blame the client as much as the sign company for accepting such garbage on their property!
