I’d like to recommend one great image cataloging software for heavy professional use but I can’t. Each of the four softwares has it’s strength and weaknesses.

iPhoto
This one is a great little app to download and organize your digital photos, but it won’t be able to make much sense of your vector files.
$49 as part of the iLife package

Extensis Portfolio
This one is a strong contender. It can manage a big number of files and it can do it fast. The only problem I have is that sometimes when I drop several files into the database to index them, if there is a corrupt file it disrupts the process. Overall this is my choice so far.
$199

iView Media Pro
This one is probably a superior product to Portfolio, but I couldn’t get used to it, because for some reason it stopped working properly after a thousand files. I should give it a second try to give better judgment.
$199.00

QPict

This one can deal with a great variety of file types. It’s a shareware and it combines the scaleability function of iPhoto and the robustness of Portfolio. The only drawback with this application is that it takes time for the previews to appear the first time. But once they appear you can scroll through the previews easily.
$35

What’s your preference? Is there an app that you would recommend?
