I’ve seen many graphic designers and operators using highly vivid desktop pictures. The colors around your work highly influence your judgment of the color schemes in your design.

For example, if you have a warm desktop, you might overdo cool colors to compensate, but once you print your artwork and take it out of the context of your screen, you will feel that you overdid the cool colors.

The lighting, the color of the walls of your room and of course the calibration of your monitor are all important factors to consider when doing color sensitive work. I know some artists, who go to the extent of wearing a neutral grey shirt for important color correction jobs.

Obviously if you don’t see the background while working, because your document covers it, than it really doesn’t matter what desktop picture you use. 🙂

The best thing to do is to use a dark grey background for design work. Hence the background of this site. 🙂 You can download the official Creative Bits desktop pictures below.
