I really HATE dark web sites. They can be somewhat beautiful but are a real pain to read, and I'm not saying this metaphorically: they really hurts the eyes. Ok, not so much with image galleries, but it does make text unbearable. That's one of the reasons I only keep up with creativebits via RSS, btw. Really, who was the first to think that light gray over black or dark gray was a good idea? The only designs I saw like that that worked were on print, and used in moderation.
Also, how can it be unconventional and elite if everyone is doing it?

Ok, Most of Sebastiaan De With's websites are absolutely gorgeous in my opinion, and are often dark. I'm surprised none of them were on this list!
