I want to like it and I read a post on Brand New about the livery being "obnoxiously American" but I also agree with them in the sense that their name is AA, they can get away with that.

My largest issue with it is I have yet to see a flat, solid black/ colour version of how this logo works. What are they going to do for emboss and foiling? Surely a large organization has use for that if not needlework for their logo in upholstery. I just am curious how you would separate the shapes since the separation feels very gradient-dependent.

I can assume the obvious but it's odd for all the mock-samples put out to the media, not one included an official sample.

They assure gradient is freshy and a possible way nowadays... but remains with critical issues as you told on solid versions.

I can't believe that 3D version too... it's so... wrong...

I posted at Designboom, I'm feeling exactly I was not wrong about Japan Airlines 2002' Landor rebrand. I was very sad when I saw it at first time and they returned to old "tsurumaru" logo recently.

i'll add my usual "not sure how it will stand up in one color"

Side note about gradients, I don't know about everyone else but I really do feel when they "make" a concept, they cheapen it entirely. So many good logos ruined by gradients.

"cheapen" would be an upgrade. more often than not, they render the logo a failure.

BIG STARS of logo design use gradients nowadays

any "BIG STAR" of logo design WOULD NOT design a logo that became a 45 degree segmented cigar in one color.

Plane crash. And talk about your cake projects - the old logo (which was begging for an update) is practically redesigning itself. American in the name, two A's, an eagle and a red, white and blue motif. Does it get any easier than that?

Classic case of over thinking a project imho.

The logo was primed for a makeover - there's no doubt. There's really nothing that appeals to me about the new one. I don't like the color, I think the text treatment overpowers the mark and the mark has all the problems ZM and WG enumerated. They don't even appear to be sitting on the same plane - the mark is angled front to back.

Just not working for me - but hey... I'm only one opinion.

made by two MONSTER logo designers (one made I♥NY logo) :

not so hard to make the related solid color version but the gradient is a bit annoying

again, i dont know that being represented in ALL CAPS or having done big dollar projects guarantees that your work is above reproach.

bad design decisions are bad design decisions. i dont care who you are or what youve done previously

Back in the day, I worked at Temerlin McClain Advertising as a photo-retoucher in Dallas, TX and I've retouched more shiny aluminum planes than I care to remember. This logo is very bad for all the obvious reasons. The classic Helvetica font has been thrown into the ditch. The double A brand with eagle which has defined the company since it's beginnings is also gone. The gradient which now defines the mark will turn to mush in magazine and newsprint.

Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
