Print your oversized artwork

Here is the deal. You've got an artwork, which is bigger than the biggest size your printer can hadle. What do you do?

I used to move the artowork around over the page to print the big artwork piece by piece. Than I found a handy feature of Illustrator CS.

Illustrator Print Tiling

In the Print dialog box chose Setup and select the Crop Artowork to: Artwork Bounding Box. Finally select Tiling: Tile Imageable Areas and hit print. You can see the preview of the tiling in the little window on the left.

I used to do tiled pages in XPress all the time. BUT.. there's a problem. If you're doing more than 2 pages, it is devilishly difficult to get all the pages stuck together and aligned properly. I remember doing lots of tiles of about 5x6 sheets, the first few pages go together nicely, but then the cumulative misalignments start adding up, and by the time you get to the last pages, you just can NOT get them to line up.
One way to increase the accuracy of alignment is to not cut each page at the crop marks, but to leave a little bit of bleed, so you can overlap each joint a bit. This helps alignment because you can overlap a bit and make up for inaccuracies in the cut edges.
But still, it can be worth the effort, even if the results aren't perfect. I still remember back around 1985, when I got my first 11x17 inkjet, and I made a 6x8 foot tiled color poster from a photo. Nobody could believe it, it was awesome.

Since I'm still working with the coal-fired Illustrator 8.0.1, I can't check...

But does the tiling dialogue offer an option for overlap?

Ivan's picture

I don't see the option for overlap.

InDesign does overlap.

Page tiling has been in almost all apps for the past 10 years =) . If you use the manual tiling you can control where the tiling starts by moving the origin of the ruler or, I think for Illustrator, move the artwork border.

Page tiling is useless without overlap.
