iPaper, the end of pdf?

Ivan's picture

Check out iPaper in action below. iPaper is a document format built for the Internet. Like a YouTube video, iPaper documents are Flash widgets which you embed in your existing web pages. PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and many other document formats can all be displayed on the web using iPaper. Ideal for client presentations. Would this technology replace pdf we send to client any time soon? I believe there is a good chance for that.

<script type="text/javascript" src='http://www.scribd.com/javascripts/view.js'></script> <script type="text/javascript"> var scribd_doc = new scribd.Document(326077, 'bz0rr7tasbhl2'); scribd_doc.write('embedded_flash'); </script>

Oh, that's beautiful.

And so very intuitive as well. Very impressive.

Flash Paper?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe this is just a rebranded implementation of Flash Paper.

My thought exactly

This was my thought exactly. I'd like to find out more in regard to this.

iPaper != FlashPaper

Hi, it's James here from Scribd. Just wanted to let you know that we built iPaper from the ground up, so it's not related at all with FlashPaper. In fact, there's a lot of features that are much better than FlashPaper. For starters, it's faster and quicker to load.

Love it!

The zoom and drag around function are as good as in Acrobat Reader. And it's a really nice solution to showing PDFs online (I hate when the browser opens up A. Reader to show one of those, and I'm sure all our clients hate it too)

Maybe

If we can tear people away from paper, online apps will all have a better chance of taking hold. As it is, most businesses would rather have a room full of filing cabinets than use online software.

Can this app work in conjunction with design apps like Creative Suite and others? If so, then you've got an idea brewing!

Replace PDF?

I don't think so. But replace the way we think about displaying information online is another story. This is a very cool technology, and I can totally see it being used on a lot of different sites. Imagine putting your hotel brochure online in this format so that people who don't know better can view and print it (rather than trying to figure out what this PDF thing is).

Nice find Ivan!

Interface Usability

I like the idea of a web plug-in for documentc, however I definitely see some issues with the usability.

Even a normal pdf is already a bit of a pain to use. You have to zoom in/out to fit your screen-size, to be able to read as much as possible, and still see the whole page. Horizontal and vertical scrolling occur...

With ipaper I have the same impression. Same user interface - same problems. Even when going to the full screen mode, which is kind of pointless, because you loose context, no really new interesting ideas for handling the problems appear...
