My site
bertlo (12 points) | Wed, 2005-04-20 11:50Hi all,
New here and also my first critique,
This is my website, which was a site to experiment to start with, but it has now turned into a site selling vinyl toys.
As a web designer I am never satisfied with my work, or if the design is not fresh enough. A designers perspective would be good.
I thought about adding a blog or have a competition but im not sure yet......

I really like the site.. it feels fresh, green color have also the feeling of being fresh.. Ok I'll bet you dying for what I don't like..
The menu I sorta like but I don't like it when the text is like pixelated.. I would like normal text..
Check in the background where the lighter green mets with the white.. it's not exactly right there..
I just woke up.. and find the text under the headlines pretty hard to read hehe lol..
What kind of system is it built on? Some preready or you made all yourself including admin stuff?
The layout is hard coded in xhtml, css and php, most of the pages should validate and be accessible as much as possible.
The items generated on the page reads the stuff from a Mysql database, nothing to complicated as im not a great coder.
The actual shopping cart is based on PHPcart, which suits me fine as I dont have tons to sell, also its fairly easy to modify and hack the code to ones needs.
The layout and design is really great!
I am most interested in the ecommerce system, PHPCart? How do you like it from an admin point of view, was the instal easy? Again great site!
Ciao, Gabriel
Great work, zowee!
that's some really nice stuff... I can't even pick anything out at the moment... what font did you use for the sub heads? sorry I'm super hung over and on my way to work... but very nice job.
wow, this one's totally awesome!

This looks good, good colors very clean feeling. The first thing that I saw that I would change is that you have your logo big and centered on the top. This creates alot of dead space around it. What do you think about sliding the logo to one side or the other and integrating the menu into that space. Tabbed navigation is also getting a bit played out, maybe you will be able to come up with something that ties into your theme a little better.
The masthead was intended to make the logo stand out and make it recognisable as possible to people without any distractions so thats why there is a lot of dead space around it.
I could scale it smaller, move it to the site, but then again what would you put in the space? random design?
I did think about setting up a competition and get people to submit new masthead designs to keep the site fresh in keeping with the style of the site but im not sure how many people would actually submit anything.
Thanks for the comments, I will play about with the top and see what I can come up with.
I really like it!
But i would change one thing. i like the type use of cup of cha but the anagram of it inside the cup doesn't really do it for me, because well mainly it reads COC. too much like Cock. i don't know if that is a selling piece or what it doesn't meld to much with vinyl toys - well more adult toys.

Ive always felt something didnt sit quite right with the logo as I am not a illustrator or logo designer but I felt that the logo was strong enough to be recognisable like all good logos are.
Perhaps removing the anagram would be better or replace it with something else?
Perhaps I should submit the logo as a seperate critique.
Congratulations!
Thanks for being constructive in your comments, as I was scared it would be ripped to shreads.
I will take into consideration the comments from people, a different perspective from likewise people is always healthy.
I like it too.. Maybe you shoul make a footer a bit smaller, maybe 2-3 lines only instead of 4. And detailed info/view in the shop.. but these are usabilty crits.
like it very much... lots of ideas to steal...
only thing I see that bugs me a bit is the menu ... the tabs don't quite seem to belong there... and the font should be simular to the headline font ...
just my two dimes...
I have made some mods to the site, namely the footer which I agree did look too long, I have trimmed this back to a few lines, also I have changed the font to be the same as the headlines for the navigation, after reading the comments, it does look a bit out of place from the rest of the site.
Tab navigation has many variations and I think it works for the site as it keep it clear and easy to follow as it wasnt put there to follow the crowd.
I think my next niggle is the masthead of the site, if im picky, any suggestions to that would be great.
For what it's worth, I liked the original Header a lot more. Far more original in my opinion, and scratch the comments about "dead space", it's called white space and there is nothing wrong with that; your goal was to isolate the logo and that is what you achieved. It's hard to tell off the screen shot for sure, but it looks like you are taking up about the same amount of vertical real estate with this new design? I was digging the original logo as well. There are too many generic boxy "logos" on the internet and it seems like you actually had the beginnings of a unique identity there. What was the reason you changed it (logo and header)?
Anyways, the site does look pretty sharp.
Good game.

Thanks for taking time to comment, Pechos I only knew someone came to my site from Creativebits in my webstats (Implemented Mint yesterday). Its great people still look at older critiques and still comment on them.
Thanks for you comments, The original logo is being revised at the moment, and thats why a generic one is on there now.
I may put the original logo and header style back soon, but just update the header part. I think one of the reasons why I took it down was becasue I felt the logo didnt look good enough and didnt convey what the site was about selling Urban Vinyl toys, though I agree its kinda distinctive and does go with the site name I guess, this is why its being revised at the moment.
- Any improvement suggestionsto the site are most welcome, as someone said to me the more you look at your site the more you want to change it because you will never be happy with it especially comparing it to other sites.
