Need help with Illustrator masking/clipping
Submitted by jaybhann on Thu, 2007-09-20 23:41.
I created what would be a hole in the ground and I want to have it appear as if an object is coming out of the hole, like a rabbit. I don't want to divide the object using pathfinder just incase I decide to move the object around at a later time, dividing it will make that a bit of pain. When I try clipping the object along with the hole, all of the object that's outside the clipping mask get cut-off. Is there another way to make this work?

New Mask
You need to make a new mask that combines the lower edge of the oval.
[Steps]
[1] Make a rectangle that covers the bottom of the oval and extends down about 1"
[2] 'Select' the ovals and 'copy' and 'paste in front'
[3] Hide the new oval set
[4] 'Select' and 'release' the clipping path on the ovals showing
[5] 'Delete' the black oval
[6] Bring the gray oval to the front
[7] select both the gray oval and rectangle
[8] 'minus' the oval out of the rectangle to produce this shape using pathfinder
[9] show all
[10] move the balls into position, arrange the layers and clip the balls using this new mask.

I would have been looking at the screen forever trying to figure out how to make this happen. Thank you.
