Editing With Style

A quick tip, but handy nonetheless. When you are applying styles in InDesign, many times you want to edit the style slightly but not actually apply it. But what to do when you already have text selected? Normally you would deselect the text (otherwise double clicking on the style to edit it would apply the style to the selected text), double click on the style in the Styles palette, make your changes, re-select all your text, and move on. That's a lot of work for a small change.

Quick Grayscale Previews

PS-Grayscale_preview_1.jpg

When you're working on a full color image, but you want to know what it will look like in grayscale for use in a newspaper ad, you can get a quick "preview" of what it will look like by hitting Command (Apple key) + Shift + U. This doesn't actually convert the image to grayscale, rather it simply desaturates the image. This will only work on single layer images, so if you have multiple layers, you'll have to flatten the image first.

Reduce low light noise with NeatImage

When shooting in low light conditions with your digital camera you will most probably end up with grainy and not so sharp images. This is especially true for consumer cameras. There is an elegant solution to this problem. NeatImage is a PhotoShop plug-in that can help you remove this noise from your images.

Tip-A-Day Giveaway!

CreativeBits is not a "press-release" type of site, but I thought this was interesting enough to mention to our InDesign CS users out there:

InTips is a "tip of the day" plug-in that helps both novice and experienced InDesign users learn to use the program more efficiently.

Fonts in the news... paper that is

A recent study by Ascender Corp. found that the 10 most popular typeface families used on the front page of newspapers are: Franklin Gothic, Poynter, Futura, Helvetica, Century, Utopia, Times, Nimrod, Bureau and Interstate. Many of these typefaces were designed specifically for newspapers - the letterforms include features for legibility that address the challenges of reproduction on newsprint.

Alignment adjustment

A while back, we offered an easy way to place a guide and have it snap to a tick mark on the ruler.

Well, one of the reasons you need the trick is because of the Photoshop Grid. The grid, accessed by hitting Command + ' (apostrophe).

The grid makes it simple to align objects when they're visible, and a real pain in the butt when they're not (because it forces a "snap to" even when the grid isn't visible).
