New Search from Microsoft

Bing is a brand new search engine launched today by Microsoft. It is replacing Live.com, but is it ready to take on Google? To properly test it one needs to spend a week or two with it, but here is a quick review.

Pros

  • Image search has unlimited scrolling, no pager.
  • Image search allows for changing thumbnail size.
  • Bing detects your location and offers search within that area
  • Subcategories appear on relevant keywords
  • Visually interesting home page
  • Better typography than Google
  • Video preview on thumbnails on hover
  • Cashback when shopping through Bing

Cons

  • Same results as on Live.com (no new engine)
  • Subcategories are not available worldwide, just US
  • Visually cluttered home page
  • Video, Maps and other searches not available worldwide
  • Video Search doesn't work properly on Macs

You did not mention the FACT that the only reason you did this story was because I shamed you into it! Nonetheless, you seem semi-fair. Google's days of dominance are loooong over people! Our search is superior by far!

I did an image search on my name, and came across this:

Funny, I don't feel dead - And I really love how you can break the entire search engine simply by searching for: "allinurl" without the quotes.

That being said, the page is designed fairly nice - it's easy to navigate, and the results are displayed quickly. It certainly LOOKS better than Google - but time will tell as to how well it works out.

with speculation on how they decided to use OUR name (a shortened version of "Bingenheimer", the name of the firm's founder) as the name of this supposed Google-killer. We're such a large, well-known conglomerate, how could they NOT have known we exist?

Also, their logo kind of blows.
