Sony Ericsson K750i - Great OS X Companion
afterglow (571 pencils) | Sat, 2005-06-04 13:42On the way back from overseas I had a jetlagged stopover in Singapore. Maybe it was the fatigue and the bank manager being 5000 miles away, but I didn't think twice about picking up this phone as a replacement for my aging Nokia 7250.
Been playing around with it for a few days and am generally very happy with it as a companion to the computer.
It's a triband GSM phone with a 2.0 megapixel camera, mp3 player, bluetooth, FM Radio, infrared connectivity and a memory card slot for media.

Pros
• Bluetooth functionality is a snap. Picked up no problem by the Mac. Address Book will flash the number onscreen as the phone rings and give you the option to answer or sms the number back. Also use it with OD4Contact which tracks your call durations to clients.
• Very small footprint and weight for such a feature packed phone.Slightly smaller and slimmer than my ipod mini.
• The camera pics are very good for a camera phone and there are a wide range of settings for camera effects and modes, including auto focus. You turn it horizontal to take a picture and use a dedicated camera button on the top in an identical fashion to normal cameras.
• The radio is nice and clear with automatic station tuning.
• Bright and relatively large screen.
• The UI is very responsive and logical. I had been used to the Nokia system so it took a bit of adjusting to the conventions but it's an identical process as a PC head learning the Mac OS.
• The sony memory stick slot means the phone memory can theoretically be upgraded to 2gb and maybe 4gb in the near future.
• The media player has a nice shuffle option and the sound quality aint half bad. Plays mp3's and wav's though i haven't tested aac files yet.Can also use mp3 as ringtones.
• Very easy to theme. (Currently running a Tiger theme as can be seen from the mini dock and toolbars)
• The light on the back would pick out Jupiter's hidden moons.
• The bundled games (flight simulator, tennis and puzzle) are graphically very good if fiddly to control on a small screen.
• Battery life for a media phone this feature packed seems pretty good so far.
• You can set it up to send and receive email though I haven't tested the feature. Works with mac.com as well apparently.
• For such a swiss army type phone the features are quite extensive and not skimped on at all.
Cons
• The voice quality and ring volume aren't as strong as the Nokia so it may mean more missed calls if the phone is not in your pocket.
• The bundled headphones are awkward and still no 3.5mm jack for your own set .(Though they are bringing out an mini jack adaptor apparently.)
• No iSync compatibility yet except through a hack but this is not a huge deal to me at the moment. I just dragged the cards I wanted from Address Book to the phone via Bluetooth.
• You must bring in contact photos separately as they are not brought over in the vCards.
I'm sure a few other niggles and happy surprises will pop up but if they add it to iSync in 10.4.2 , I'll be a happy bunny. Now how to figure out how to hack the menu icons.
There's a more in depth review at http://www.MobileBurn.com/review.jsp?Id=1393
Think it might be called the D750 for if you're on T-Mobile in the U.S. but not out there yet apparently.

Welcome in the club Afterglow..
Picked mine up last week, and I love it, my best mobile so far..
I would like to speak with the headset while charging the batterys..
And I think the volume of the speaker when talking without the headset is a bit low.. But other facts then that it's a lovely phone..
I also use a Bluetooth module in my G5 and transfer files pretty quickly without a fuzz, but I heard that people have had problems with syncing and the cable with Mac OS X..
Thanks for the review. I was looking at buying one of these new Sony Ericssons myself. Having a T68i I really got to like their design and usability.
The thing I remember from my T68i is that the menu was terrible SLOW in the menus compared to the T630 and with my K750i the menus of the T630 seems slow.. That's great improvement I think!
Just tried it with the USB cable and it comes up as a removeable drive while charging. Just a case of drag and drop then ala the iPod

Congrats on the phone purchase! I got mine last week and I have been extremely pleased with it. The only problem is the fact that Apple has yet to officially support the phone with iSync... How did you guys get around that problem?
Btw I think you should post some pictures taken with K750i... The image quality is just gorgeous (for a phone camera)
How many mega pixels is your phone? Mine is at 1.3 and I think its great too for a phone camera :)
Does your phone pair properly with the OS? If it doesn't then try adding the computer to the phone and not vice versa. I had to add the computer device from the phone rather than from the computer to get it to show up in iSync.
Let me know if that works for ya :)
I have the s710a. It doesnt have the radio tuner built into it but you guys should check it out. It works great. Bluetooth functionality is awesome and overall love the phone. New form factor though so maybe not all of you will like it but I think its a pretty cool phone with tons of features and overall kick ass phone that is a great OSX companion as well.

I simply cannot live without a Nokia Symbian phone, try it somday, works great with Macs too!
After reading your review here and the stuff Andy Budd wrote at his blog I went right out and bought it, I haven't even tried it yet, they are going to deliver it next week. Sure hope it works as great as you say since my Powerbook needs a new best friend after my Ericsson T39m died some weeks ago.
My camera seems to be broken =(
Whenever I try pull the lense cover or press the camera icon it doesn't start and goes back to the main menu..
Othervise it's an awsome phone.. K750i with a Mac and Bluetooth it's great!
Now, I need to reread this post. :)
It now works fine as a USB drive.....and salling clicker 3.0 works with it.

What's the use of Salling Clicker?
I heard many times about it but never had the time to check it up..
It's a remote control that afterglow created for free here. I don't see why anyone would pay 30 USD for a feature that is there for free.
Well Jonas does a few more tricks with his software whereas my remotes are just customized versions of the built in bluetooth remote.
Whatever works for you.....

I managed to get a SE v600i over the weekend.
Beautiful phone, now i'm just trying to sort out video imports etc.
If I wassn't busy at work I could easily spend all day playing around with the phone!!
