Linotype Free Font explorer with CS4

I managed to get the linotype fontexplorer free version working with CS4. Here is how:

  1. Download the Fontexplorer Pro version; open the image
  2. Choose view package and go to Resources, Plugins
  3. Get the CS4 plugins and copy them to your desktop. (.zip files)
  4. Now unmount & throw the pro-version away
  5. Unpack the zipped files and put the plugins in the program-plugin-folders
  6. Restart Linotype and your other to-be-font-managed-programs and you have it all working

As pub3abn mentioned:
The free version of FontExplorer does not contain plugins for CS4. Of course it will still manage fonts just fine, as far as turning them on and off, but it won't auto-activate fonts, or any other features the plugin may provide, under CS4.

The free version indeed does not contain plugins for cs4, that is why i described how to get the plugins from the non-free version. You use the plugins from the non-free version to install them at Indesign plugin or Illustrator plugin or Quark plugin folder. Then you wont need the non-free version anymore, because the free version detects the installed cs4 plugins and indeed auto-activates the fonts.

So:

1. you rip the plugins from the non-free version
2. you use the plugins in your programs
3. the free linotype version will detect fonts and open them because it recognizes the plugins.

Why would throw away the Pro version you have bought just to extract the plug ins and go use the free version of FontXplorer? I don't get it.

I recently started using Font manager and using Suitcase Fusion 2 for now. I can't get it to auto activate the fonts for CS4 suite (Photoshop, Illustrator). Any idea? I tried looking into to help files but no use.

Yes. Visit this site, it says that the plugins are in the latest update.

I tried doing this, but the plug-ins still don't show up in the "Plug-ins Manager" UI.

I un-ZIP'd the files, opened the image of the free version, placed the plugins into the folder, and then restarted the program(and my computer). Nothing happened.

Thoughts?

Yes. The plugins you 'extract' from the new Fontexplorer Pro should be unzipped and placed in the Programs folders. (Like Indesign Plugin go to Indesign/Plugins in your program folder). You use the 'old' FontExplorer just like you normally would; it will auto-activate your fonts in cs4 programs. Hope i helped ya!

I realize this thread hasn't been too active in awhile, but I just upgraded to CS4 and still want to use Font Explorer. I got the plug-ins as described above, and put them in the right locations in the apps folder, but since Font Explorer only recognizes CS, CS2, and CS3, how do I get CS$ into the plug0in manager? The plug-ins aren't any good unless I can point the plug-in manager towards them?

I'm sure I'm doing something wrong..but any info would be helpful

For me, it works without the pluginmanager. The plugins in the programs do the work; so indesign CS4 doesn't have to be recognized in the Fontexplorer-plugin-manager...

thanks foe the quick reply

I'll try to work on it again tonight. I think I have the new plug-ins in the right place because I looked in my older CS3 programs and put them right in the same places in the CS4 programs. Although I couldn't find the old p-shops plug-in.

Hello. I followed istructions to install font autoactivation plugin, but it doesn't work: plugin starts Fontexplorer X but not activates fonts in InDesign CS4. Where's the problem?

Did you activate the "Auto-activate fonts by plugins when possible" option in the Linotype-Fontexplorer-preferences?

I did it! and I added ID in applications list. Other ideas?

Nope.. im sorry.. Maybe you can verify in ID if the plugin is being recognized in the menu InDesign/Plugins?
