The new Layers magazine
Ivan | Thu, 2005-04-07 19:03The Mac Design Magazine has changed it's name to Layers to attract digital photographers and video editors.
They have some nice free PhotoShop tutorials. Actually, the one explaining the displacement maps (illustrated on the right) is so very similar to my post about fitting artwork on t-shirts.
Too bad the new Layers magazine is only covering Adobe products. I love Adobe, but I really don't feel like locking into one company's products. Apple and Macromedia does fantastic software, not to mention the tons of great small software developers. If they were to leave their profile a bit more open I would definitely subscribe.

I agree to an extent. I did look and realized that Dreamweaver and Final Cut were the only apps that were going to change. I don't use FCP so Dreamweaver is the only one that affects me personally. I'll still subscribe. Can't beat it for 20 bucks.
Can't blame 'em I guess. The advertising $$ generated by a Mac mag can't be all that much. I'm sure this opens up the possibilities.
I'm disappointed with their change, as I have been a subscriber since the near beginning. In Scott Kelby's announcement, he said things weren't going to change that much, but in fact, they are. If they are trying to attract more video people, why drop Final Cut Pro from the mag? Because they want to support Adobe's video app, a PC only app at that. After years of reading Kelby poke fun of Windows users who wrote in as being closet Mac fans, did Kelby finally break down to their demands of equal PC coverage, or was he really a closet PC guy, making money off the Mac faithful? I really think he is an Adobe guy, wanting to make more money. Too bad it is going to ruin a good mag, one which they proudly in the past noted as the only Mac oriented graphics magazine. I know I won't be renewing. There are plenty of places to get a fill of Adobe apps and tutorials online, and without the PC only ones that will now be taking up space in the mag.
