This World Made Itself: The Intersection of Animation and Performance

Combining animation, video and live performance is tricky enough that artists rarely tackle it. But Los Angeles-based animator, designer and multimedia artist Miwa Matreyek seems to have come up with a compelling mix in the form of This World Made Itself, which she'll be performing February 7-9 at the The Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT) in Los Angeles, along with her earlier Myth and Infrastructure.

Fontyou Beta Tests Collaborative Type Factory

Paris-based Fontyou was founded in 2013 with the idea that while designers share a love for type and often create new letterforms, they lack the time or technical skills to extend their ideas to the point of creating a complete font. One aspect of Fontyou is that it provides designers with a place to share such work for comment by the design community and receive inspiration from other work. In some cases Fontyou also plays the role of working with such type fragments to turn them into fonts or vectors sold on its site, with a percentage of royalties going to the creator of the submission.

Dieter Rams' 10 Principles of Good Design in Poster Format

During decades as head of design for Braun, Dieter Rams was involved in the development of hundreds of products. However, his rigorous approach to creating a visual design language extended much farther, notably inspiring Apple's Jonathan Ive. Rams was able to distill his approach into ten principles of good design:

You say you love Helvetica but can you write in it?

I'm guessing you can't. And so is Jesse England, who has kicked off a series of free training materials designed to help you master the art of writing in a font of your choice, beginning with Helvetica Light. Why the heck would you want to do that, you ask? Well, first of all, imagine how cool it would be to send your clients and colleagues notes hand-written in Helvetica. But beyond that, involving the body is the best way to master any domain, so in this England is on solid pedagogical ground. I could see this as a valuable element of courses on typography, for example.

OSX concept inspired by iOS7

Designer Stu Crew creates OS X Ivericks concept.

He writes:
iOS 7 will change Apple's software design dramatically leaving OS X behind. In order to visualise the new style on a Mac screen I recreated several elements and applied them to several programs. Created to explore the idea of an updated OS X this is just a update of looks with a few new functions taken from both the iPhone and iPad.

Coming to a Screen Near You: Subconscious Password

Last week's SIGGRAPH conference was once again the showcase for fresh directions in animation. One of the many ingenious works being presented would seem to have been Chris Landreth's animated short, Subconscious Password. Landreth snagged an Oscar for his 2004 short Ryan and seems to be back in fine form, with the new film already winning best short film at the 2013 Annecy International Animated Film Festival.

Work, Buy, Consume, Die Gets Funded

I've been watching with interest the Kickstarter project that has as its goal creating a series of short films about design firm the Designers Republic, which in its 25 year history has helped push design as we know it into some fresh new spaces. The good news is that with just three days to go the project has now been funded, with support ranging from £1 up to £1,000.

The World According to PANTONE

Chicago-based photographer Paul Octavious has embarked on an ambitious program of matching colors from the Pantone Plus Series Formula Guides to his observations in the real world. Which is not exactly what these were designed for but what the heck — it's more an example of how important it is to stay awake and be aware of what you're looking at. Paul just began this projet so you can stay current by following him on Instagram.
